This album features a young Lou Reed before he became better known on his solo albums. The Velvet Underground were ahead of their time with the sound they produced and back in 1967 I had never heard a band use a violin the way they did in the song heroin! The music slowly builds with Lou Reed’s vocals matching the tension of the violin in the background building to a screaming solo and then sliding back to a quiet ending. Definitely one of my favorite songs from my teenage years. This is a classic collectors item from the hippie era and a must have for anyone who wants to relive the start of the psychedelic music scene and Haight Ashbury.
