Label Conditions: Both ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A beautiful clean and superbly pressed record that offers super-clean sound.

Cat Number: 2353022.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 107 grams. These MGM records are seldom pressed heavy, but this one is VERY well-pressed with very clean sound.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: First issues are rare, I have yet to have one. This is a 1970s pressing, exact date, not sure, but these were later repressed by Polydor and MGM copies of any kind are quite elusive.

Original Year of Release: 1969. This a copy from around the mid-70s or possibly earlier.

Musicians: Lou Reed – lead and rhythm guitar, piano, lead vocals; Sterling Morrison – rhythm and lead guitar, backing vocals; Maureen Tucker – percussion, vocals, backing vocals; Doug Yule – bass guitar, organ, vocals, backing vocals.

Brief Info: Classic third album which took a major change in direction, a move Reed insisted on as he did not want the band to be predictable and felt another ‘White Light’, would not be a good idea. A more subdued, quieter album that includes some beautiful songs including the delicate ‘Candy Says’ – she later reappeared on the Reed’s masterpiece, ‘Transformer’, also the eerie ‘Jesus’ and the hauntingly sublime ‘Pale Blue Eyes’k arguably Lou’s greatest ever gentle song which is the price alone. With John Cale the avant garde Welshman now gone, this was a very different Velvet Underground, but equally compelling. The songs may be more ‘gentle’, but still have an edgy quality and the bizarre ‘Murder Mystery’, still remains just that, a bizarre mystery, bar far the most difficult song on the album. This MGM copy is a beauty and offers lovely clean sound, never to be taken for granted on this label. An album less-lauded than the previous two, but I regard this a classic and only second to the monumental debut that remains in my top 5 albums of all-time.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with a matt, smooth finish. Printed and made in England by Akenmay Ltd.

Cover Front: A few generally small and light surface creases that are mainly confined to the very edges and few will avoid. Few marks and barely any rubbing to the very dark surface. The odd tiny corner tip tip-in register little from the previous very particular owner. The lack of ring wear on this very wear-prone cover always very good news.

Cover Back: Even better if anything with little to fault.

Top & Bottom Edges:Minimal rubbing on dark surfaces, again the odd tiny tip-in possible which I will always mention if I suspect it. Anything quite discrete and little spoils this cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with little wear with any thickening or burring minimal as seen critically viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, mainly traight with only the odd light compression, all text perfect and unworn and quite well centred on a fairly narrow depth. On small chip has a gentle tip-in, that I can see for sure viewed up close.

Corners: As stated further up, a little tip enhancements via the previous particular owner, quite discrete overall, very fine shape mainly retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this fragile 1970’s cover, one that will could prove difficult to find much better. This wear-prone sleeve should please many collectors if the small edge and tip enhancements are not an issue.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with a little creasing and all edges unsplit, overall this has aged little.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A copy very little played on all the evidence and with due care from a careful previous owner with top quality equipment. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very clean record plays up to its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high and as good as it almost gets. Velvet Underground albums were deliberately not high fidelity classics, that would not have been right for their style and brand of music, but this is certainly better produced than the low-fi debut. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing for this label that could often prove variable. This one is one of the cleanest sounding copies of this album I have ever heard. Few copies will outperform this one I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, although it gets less attention than the previous albums, this is simply another VU masterwork, and proved Reed could now produce quieter, more sensitive material. The man was never predictable, and this album would have taken the few who bought it initially by surprise for sure. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
