Produced by the legendary and enigmatic Joe Meek, this album is a showcase for both the artistry and limitations of Meek's productions. "Telstar," the first British number one single in America, is the obvious gem here. The organ sound is both extremely compressed and expanding at the same time. There is a very spiritual base to the song and yet there is also a cheesy aspect. (the male chorus of "ahs" toward the end of the song) The combination of artfulness and kitsch of "Telstar" typifies the best and worst of the record. "Love and Fury" works quite well as a "Telstar" clone featuring a similar sounding organ and a male chorus copying the pleasant, sing-along melody. On the other hand, "Theme from A Summer Place" comes across more as corn than art, even with birds chirping and echoey lead guitar lines. Listeners won't be tempted to forget Percy Faith's version after hearing this one. "Jungle Fever" ranks with Meek's more unique productions, though. It's lion-in-the-jungle feel could be taken from some B grade movie, but it is somehow strangely affecting. Like the best of Joe Meek's productions, there is an amateurish quality, yet also a uniqueness and search for meaning through the art of sound.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY MICHAEL OFJORD, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Joe Meek's experimental, gizmo-heavy production of the British instrumental pre-Beatles classics is, by now, legendary. Employing everything from amplifier noise to pots and pans and Esquivel-esque vocal effects, Meek was capable of creating  unique background "canvases" upon which his bands would superimpose their sound. The final result was an extraordinary, quirky, inventive, fuzzy, almost psychedelic, yet warm and humane instrumental, pseudo-surf sound which aged incredibly well. Although Meek passed away under tragical circumstances 42 years ago, his legacy lives on in the sound of many modern bands. This, his production of the Tornadoes' first (and only) album, includes "Telstar", probably one of the most instantly recognizable tunes in history of recorded sound, a tribute to the Man's trip to space.

The whole album - just as much as the hit single "Telstar", vibrantly explodes in your face with incredible, unique production sounds not heard before or since. There are several tracks on here just as thrilling as "Telstar". Considering everythng I've read on Joe Meek has described him as unable to play an instrument or sing a note, I'd love to know by what method he composed some of the songs on this album where he's got the sole songwriter credit.

This is one of only two Meek-produced albums released in the United States that we are aware of.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original polylined  “Made in Great Britain” stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
