PLEASE, SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY THANKS SO MUCH, PLEASE EMAIL WITH ANY QUESTIONS... THE STAINS / "JOHN WAYNE WAS A NAZI" / ORIGINAL 1981 / M-
Incredibly rare original issue of this Stains 45 before they became MDC. A-side "John Wayne Was a Nazi" (1:57), B-side "Born To Die" (2:32). Label is R Radical Records. I am listing this on behalf of the owner, who has provided background on it as follows:
"Disc is a conservative M-, has been played twice. I bought this record, new, in the SF Bay Area promptly upon its release, I think 1981; probably at one of the band's shows. I played it once, then filed it away till now whereupon I played it again just to check it for eBay quality. It played fine, is scratch-free, and super-glossy. A-side matrix inscriptions: 38550 - 1:57 / AL. B-side matrix inscriptions: 38550 - 2:32, preceded by a squiggly little 2-line wavy thing; then AL. Labels are perfect. Sleeve is M-. No markings, tears or ringwear whatsoever. This is the early issue, before "MDC" was added to the front cover graphic. Sleeve is an open foldover type, slightly oversize, on a very lite cardstock, with colors green/red/black printed (possibly silkscreened) on both outer sides. The inside is black text for lyrics/credits. The clear plastic outer sleeve is the exact same one it came with in 1981, and the plain white inner sleeve containing the disc is also!
"Whereas this single has been widely reissued, repro'ed, etc., this particular copy is an ABSOLUTE ORIGINAL. I have researched (Popsike, etc.) credible auctions and set sales found only 6 copies of it on eBay since 2003, the most recent being June 2009. Most of those copies were torn / marked /flawed. I am aware of those bids and and have specified the reserve figure for Westwoodonebob to place on it based on the record's current value as researched, and its near-new condition. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better copy than this one, ever. It is virtually pristine." OK, SO THAT IS HOW MY FRIEND DESCRIBES THIS INCREDIBLY RARE PUNK RECORD, HERE A LITTLE MORE RESEARCH ON THE BAND WHO WITHIN A SHORT TIME OF THIS RELEASE BECAME KNOWN AS MDC.... HERE'S SOME BACKGROUND ON THEM.. MDC (Millions of Dead Cops) is an American hardcore punk band formed in Austin, Texas in 1979. The band were subsequently based in San Francisco, California, and are currently based in Portland, Oregon. MDC originally formed as The Stains before changing their name. Playing hyper-speed punk rock associated with far left sociopolitical issues has earned the band close association with Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys, as well as numerous other US punk bands of the early eighties. The band was also unique in frequently changing their name to a different initialism of MDC with every new record released. MDC's initial run ended in 1995, and the band spent five years on hiatus before returning in 2000 with new members. Early years
Formed in 1979 as The Stains and playing their first gig under this name in April 1980, MDC were one of three pioneering hardcore punk bands in Austin, Texas, in the early '80s, alongside The Dicks and Big Boys. These bands frequently played together and established the Austin hardcore scene. They released one single as the Stains in 1981, featuring a slower version of the future MDC song "John Wayne Was a Nazi" backed with "Born to Die". Both songs were later released on the debut MDC album.
1980s
By 1982 the band had relocated to San Francisco, California, and renamed themselves MDC. By this point the band were active participants in the growing hardcore scene and released their debut LP Millions of Dead Cops on their own label, R Radical; Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles helped with distribution. The album is now widely considered a punk classic, and features songs such as "John Wayne Was a Nazi", "Dick for Brains", and the harsh criticism of the police, "I Remember". Other targets of criticism devoid of irony included capitalism ("Corporate Death Burger"), homophobia ("America's So Straight"), and American culture ("Violent Rednecks").
Selections from The Punk Vault [The Stains/MDC]
The Stains – John Wayne Was a Nazi 7? (1981 Radical Records)
You might be more familiar with them as MDC (an acronym that would constantly change), but they got their start as The Stains.
In 1981 Dave Dictor, Al Schvitz, and Ron Posner, all residents of Austin, TX, formed a punk band called The Stains. They put out this 7? before they realized there already was a band called The Stains (who put out one album on SST Records). They had to change their name because while there could be two Subhumans and two Youth Brigades, there could not be two Stains. A member of The Dicks (also a fellow Austin band) suggested the name and MDC they became.
Along with the name change came a change of residence. They moved to San Francisco and became pretty well known with the city’s peace punk movement. They moved into the “Vats” where another band, Condemned to Death resided and rehearsed. It wouldn’t be long before The Dicks would also relocate to San Francisco (well, half of them anyway).
Upon the name change and move, they put out their first album, which is a hardcore classic by today’s standards. They had their own label (Radical Records, later R Radical) and put out not only their own records, but by those of their friends Reagan Youth, Condemned to Death, The Offenders, and The Dicks.
The band toured the country plenty of times and put out a steady stream of records throughout the 80s, each one with a different theme and acronym. Over the years, members would slowly leave until Dave fond himself the only original member left. In the early 90s, the band (or at least Dave) relocated to Portland for a number of years. Dave also had a well documented (by him in his MRR columns) drug problem. Today MDC is still kicking with Dave and a crop of new members and Dave was residing in New York the last I heard. He was writing columns for Maximumrocknroll for a couple years but seemed to have stopped doing that. There is a MDC website that has a bunch of information on what the band is up to these days.
This particular record had two pressings. The first only had “The Stains” name on the sleeve, the second (pictured here) added the MDC name to reflect them having changed the name. The label art was different on the second pressing as well. I am actually in need of a picture sleeve for the first pressing as I have a copy of the vinyl that is missing the sleeve if anyone can help me out, please contact me.
As always, if you have any additional information or were in MDC, please get in touch.
