*** The song, co-written by band singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, was released in August 1984 as the B-side of the single "William, it's really nothing." Band and producer John Porter felt that they could have a hit with "How Soon Is Now?" And wanted to release it as a single. However, their record label, Rough Trade, felt that the track was too much of a departure The Smith's signature sound and released it as side B instead. Porter later became angry and remembered, "They completely threw it away and wasted it." Fortunately, some British radio stations started playing the song and soon became the band’s most requested track. The song was subsequently included in the band's compilation album Hatful of Hollow, released in November 1984.
This song was released in the US by Sire Records in the same month, using "Girl Afraid" as the B side. In addition, it was re-released as a lead single in the UK in January 1985, and the B side became "Well I Wonder". Unfortunately, the single failed the chart in the US and peaked at number 24 in the UK.
Like many great songs that didn't make a big hit at the time of release, it has been ranked as one of their favorite and most beloved songs. In 2014, NME ranked 4th on the list of the best 500 songs ever. Pitchfork named it the 10th best song of the 1980s, and in 2010 Rolling Stone ranked 477th on a list of the best 500 songs ever.
