Label/Format/Overview: Immediate – original pale lilac mono format with matt, smooth surfaces. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both letters unworn as seen.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, these are very prone to showing spindle marks freely on unforgiving pale surfaces. So glad to state this copy has only mostly fine, quite few and light ones that show little. For those who bought this on issue in mono, most played it heavily, often to near destruction on the most basic of record players tracking at huge weight. Although this copy has been played a few times and has fine surface marks, it still plays superbly with little unwanted – no distortion at all, and no pops or clicks were noted. This was a genuine thrill to play-grade and this psych masterpiece in mono is so incredibly hard to find in this clean visual and playing condition. The cover is equally impressive with little to fault bar a small inside tape (or likely sticker) residue mark – this NOT on a fold. More information on all elements further down.

Rarity: Rare as a first issue mono. This has always been a highly challenging album to find in anything like top conditions. Firstly the cover: clearly ultimate fragile with multiple small hinge folds that seldom remain strong or solidly intact. Many seen torn, split or repaired with tape or crudely with glue – often the cover actually in pieces. This copy has NO such issues – all folds are strong and pretty much fully intact with no repairs. Yes one smallish sticker or possibly tape residue mark inside on a flat area, not on a fold as seen. I suspect a retailers sticker or personal sticker from the owner, that pure speculation only. The sticker has gone, a mild darkened residue left only with no damage to the card surface. The record is delicate, it has moments of quietness, especially side two. So copies that have been overplayed or abused on vintage record players are of little use for the more discerning collector. Again, this record is really nice and has no penetrating stylus scratches. Only fine, wispy surface marks or hairlines seen under light that have no affect on sound. For collectors wishing to experience this pop-psych classic in 1960s mono as a first issue, this will take some beating. Such copies are rare, elusive and seldom surface.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the iconic classic albums from the late 1960s. Along with The Who, one of the most famous ‘mod’ bands of all time – ‘Ogden’s’ took The Small Faces into the flower-power scene that embraced 1967, ‘the summer of love’, but they did not sacrifice their identity and retained their distinctive sound and perspective. A good time ‘conceptual’ album that carries a high sense of tongue-in-cheek fun, Marriott’s cockney vocals rarely sounded better especially on the classic single ‘Lazy Sunday’. Eccentric comedian, Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite ‘Happiness Stan’ that occupies side two in his invented ‘Unwinese’ language. Never falling into ‘novelty tag’ due to the brilliance of all the songs, this album is a pure joy from start to finish. A strong selling album, reaching the top spot in the UK but a lowly 159 in the US – maybe a little to eccentric for their market at the time. Including an innovative multi-fold out, matt, unprotected cover, made to resemble a tobacco tin, this classic album received rave reviews on issue and is still great fun to listen to today. The sleeve proved expensive to manufacture, and later ones reverted to a standard square format. A masterful swan-song for this band, it could have hardly ended on a higher note and this fantastic, fully intact copy does it high justice with clean mono sound with very little unwanted – even being played on clinically revealing stereo equipment. Over time, this has become one of my favourite albums within the greatest year in music, and even the entire decade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and even this is being somewhat critical, I can hardly imagine ever finding a great deal better or more intact with less real wear. I have NOT taken into account of the smallish sticker mark I have mentioned already, that is purely subjective and is not wear or damage per se. I have described the format above and my pictures should ‘describe’ it better than loads of words. It was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. The back has the UK Patent Application No of 21639/68 and Design Application No 936818. Included is the elusive shaped unlined inner sleeve, this is NOT a cut down inner and came with this record. Hopefully my pictures speak for themselves – a substantially better example of quite possibly the world’s most fragile cover will not be found easily.

Cover – The Ten Faces: All the eight illustrated faces are in superb condition, bar the small darkened residue mark as seen and mentioned already. All are seen in my pictures and these should speak for themselves. Deep rich colour is retained by all including the more vulnerable front and back ‘covers’. Clean, fresh and practically no wear or grubbiness traces at all, a cover little used or handled and the lack of creasing to single thickness card is a huge plus. The two non-graphic, plain white circle faces do have some mild ageing and one in particular, moderate set-off, where ink rests upon plain card, that is very hard to avoid. So in this respect, these plain card circles have aged, but that simply is not the case for the printed circles which really do look lovely – hopefully, all can be clearly seen – use the Ebay magnifier to see them right up close. The printed circles will prove difficult to find better.

Cover – The Hinges: All hinge folds are solid with minimal hints of stressing, and no splits or repairs (and no tape on these most delicate areas). Even their ends retain their ink and are barely any scuffing or abrasions. Clearly a cover seldom unfolded or handled, these delicate parts are not seen often this firmly intact.

Cover – The Rims: Any of the very little thickening or burring to the circle ends (or rims) is mainly very light and equally little, these only really seen viewed end-on. All circles are neat and generally crisp, especially seen normally full-on. There are no tears evident, and compared to most I have seen, this one of the neatest, crispest examples yet.

Cover Summary: Put simply: this cover looks very impressive. Okay, a smallish residue blemish and natural set-off/gentle ageing to the white inner circles. But with so many seen in tatters, badly rubbed, torn, very poorly repaired, creased and severely aged, this is an example on the almost other side of the cover spectrum. It remains unusally strong and intact, fresh and mostly clean, and certainly attractive. Not one to be opened and closed often, such fragile pieces always carry a risk of damage and when so intact, best left that way. This excellent example could indeed prove a major upgrade for many and most collectors will enjoy owning this one as long as ‘perfection’ is not mandatory – and good luck finding one of those.

The Inner Sleeve: AROUND EXCELLENT: mainly due a crease and some crinkle. This I am sure is the genuine original, it not not a cut-down of a standard sleeve. Minor ageing, but intact, if creased. This inner is so often missing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): this going strictly by the book – in real terms for 48-year-old popular mono record, this is better than that. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Under bright angled light, hairlines or mostly very fine, wispy surface marks are seen, but no penetrating stylus scratches. Viewed in normal daylight conditions, the record still looks very impressive, even exceptional (compared to many). These minor and superficial wispy marks almost certainly the result of dry-cloth ‘cleaning’ that leave this super-fine marks or hairlines. Totally harmless and almost the norm on such records, given the fact it was the recommended method to ‘clean’ records at this time. Given the age and album type – this was popular – a lovely early mono example that will please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage psych classic plays even above its hugely respectable visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A superb mono original record that presents the sound very differently to the mono. All the music and vocal parts are totally crisp and focused, no break-up of the clarity, these grooves portray no audio wear or irritating noises. Any surface sounds minimal, very infrequent and as light as could almost be conceivably expected from a used mono record being played on very revealing, fairly high-end equipment, mere traces at most to my ears anyway that is little more than natural contact sound that gives the analogue format its warmth. My Linn LP12 and Naim amp take few prisoners, and such clinical stereo equipment was not really designed to play these vintage mono records. Even on the spoken word parts of side two, this also plays quietly, and no pops or clicks were noted. A hugely challenging album, but this was a joy to play-grade. Few copies will outperform this very early, elusive mono pressing significantly I feel sure. These type of albums were simply played into submission, even trashed, when they look and sound this good, you have something really special and the importance of this classic record cannot be denied. Both channels are clean and sharp with no pressing or tracking issues*, I feel very sure this record has been played only lightly, mainly with due care (especially in context of era and mode) and has been clearly well stored within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – my first worthy mono copy for ages, just enough (arguably) to politely remind of what you are actually listening to. This blows away any digital version. These are fast drying up now and cleaner examples remain harder to find. The minor surface marks are simply ignored and finding this better will never prove easy. This copy, although not pristine visually, will prove very difficult indeed to find significantly better and it should also please many collectors. Remember: “Life is just a bowl of All-bran, you wake up every morning and its there” – well you won’t wake up to find a pale lilac label mono copy of this album often these days, that is for certain.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
