Label Conditions: Both are very clean, fresh and attractive with just one small faint spindle trace each side. This splendid early 1970s pressing looks hardly even played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good weight for any record.

Rarity: Moderate, even originals with the 3D cover are not too hard to find for an album that sold well. This is an early 1970s repress, still with the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back cover. The cover now has the gimmick 3D feature replaced by a printed graphic. In all tense and purpose, this is now much easier to focus on and showing all the picture detail in a far more clear defined way. So in my opinion anyway, both covers are of huge interest for Rolling Stones fans and collectors as they are so different in that respect. All else is the same except the label format and the inner sleeve. Most important is the audio quality for me, this hardly played top-quality Decca record plays superbly, the cover itself also in fantastic condition as seen. Such copies are quite hard to find.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Rolling Stones album will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper – their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing albums in this style. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure, a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius – ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations, and both songs remain personal favourites within their singles catalogue. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects, and for The Rolling Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both mono and stereo as they sound very different. The mono version offers a more punchy sound with greater bass depth and warmth. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence – and of course separation which is so essential for psychedelic music. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one – it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up – this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning.

Cover Condition and Details: NEAR MINT: a non-3D graphic gatefold format with the front laminated front and back. The back includes the mono/stereo peep-hole, this filled with a blue inner to denote a stereo record inside. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed in England by Robert Stace, includes the polylined stereo indicator inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination: Both front and back are in stunning condition. Put simply, it looks practically as-made with ultra shiny fresh, clear laminate with no lifts, creasing of any note or dulling. The lack of the 3D feature allows perfect viewing of the superb graphic which is a piece of art that cannot really be seen to full advantage on the gimmick original. This version is a glorious piece of art in its own right, and arguably never need any gimmickry in the first place.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Pristine and the same as the original, all main faces are immaculate.

Top Edges: Straight, flush and unworn with super-smooth surfaces.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are naturally open with no adhesive on the front, so naturally made this way. All edges are mainly very sharp with any traces few, small and light seen end-on. No trimming or enhancements guaranteed.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, very straight and uncrushed with no compression and only a gentle tilt to the right. Folded very square, so all edges meet-up closely together and parallel. No damage, chipping or wear, all text is unworn under the solid, unpeeled or cracked laminate, also beautifully centred as-seen. Incredibly, the surface and BOTH folds remain ultra smooth to the fingertip without a single scuff or rough area at all.

Corners: All corners are also immaculate with no knocks, dinks or rubbing, perfect shape retained for all with no creasing.

Cover Summary: Being totally honest, I prefer this cover version to the 3D original, simply because that front artwork is so clear to view. This cover is almost out-of-the-shop immaculate and a true delight to look at. I actually think also, these are seen far less often than the big-selling original, and rarely still looking as issued. A truly beautiful cover and one to please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: now including a polylined blue inner to fill the back cover peep-hole to denote a stereo record inside. This only gently aged by the usual darkening of the seam area adhesive. Two pristine circles and lovely, fresh clear lining. Minimal creasing with all edges intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any surface traces ultra fine and wispy as seen under very bright light. Viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. A superb hardly record that sounds as good as it looks. Very solid, with excellent shine and pressed to the usual excellent standard by Decca. No old basic stylus have been anywhere near this fantastic copy. Far fewer originals will survive like this, and if they do, at what cost? If the music is the most important factor, this great copy more than fits the bill.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this still relatively early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been meticulously stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
