Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Brief Artist & Album Info: This Rolling Stones album will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper – their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing albums in this style. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure, a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius – ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better here than compilations, and both songs remain personal favourites within their singles catalogue. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects, and for The Rolling Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both mono and stereo as they sound very different. The mono version offers a more punchy sound with greater bass depth and warmth. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence – and of course separation which is so essential for psychedelic music. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one – it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up – this is a very intense experience that can leave you spinning. This copy on offer has a lovely 3D cover and flame inner, but the record grade very good and has clearly been played a number of times. The content still plays very well and without wear or distortion, but there is some gentle surface sound here-and-there and a few clicks the same. So this is not for purists or perfectionists who want flawless sound. I know for sure, many collectors will tolerate a few imperfections and consider it part of the vintage vinyl experience – I equally know for sure, some only want ‘perfect’ sound at any cost – so I do emphasise, this record does have some contact sound here-and-there, but generally light and infrequent.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better still. The record may have been enjoyed several times, but the cover is in very impressive clean condition. This a gatefold format, the outer faces laminated with the front including the 3D psychedelic hologram effect graphic feature. The inside is matt and smooth, the front card being single thickness. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the very fragile ‘fire flame’ inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and hardly creasing or dulling. The front card still flat without the usual bowing caused by the hologram. Indeed this cover is one of the finest dedicated mono covers I have seen, the back especially I happy grade as mint minus.

The 3D hologram panel: This neat and flat and only shows fine light marks seen under light. This being only reason I did not include the extra (+) for my overall cover grading. But little detracts from this famous 3 dimensional feature that was later removed from this cover, replaced by a standard printed version into the 1970s.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Beautiful artwork seen to near maximum advantage with little to fault at all as-seen. The lack of rubbing and creasing to these matt surfaces is seldom seen on the earliest covers.

Top Edges: The fold and card ends shows minimal thickening making them unusually fine.

Bottom Edges: Similar with any rubbing to the fold only light and patchy, this fragile storage edge has fared very well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Most of any thickening – which is only light and patchy – on the back entrance edge. Being a fraction proud of the other two, they have been naturally protected by it, hence these two have minimal wear.

Spine and Text: A superb spine with hardly any trace of wear at all. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, again, note the mono prefix.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creasing tiny and light, hardly any really with excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive and fresh all-round example of this classic 1960’s feature cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and one of the very few I have seen or had that is naturally intact with no splits to the edges. A very thin paper inner that was not lined, making them very fragile and prone to all forms of damage from the heavy early records. Like the hologram on the main cover, this ‘flame’ inner was withdrawn from later copies. This is very clean, fresh with any creasing or crinkle light. The lack of ring wear is a major plus as few avoid that either.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: still a very respectable visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy certainly played a number of times with numerous, mostly fine, even wispy surface marks seen under light. Any of the few penetrating stylus scratches being very small and few, hence there are a few sporadic clicks here-and-there. So not one for audiophile collectors or absolute sound purists as there are blemishes in places. But this still a fine overall example with the majority playing very well, albeit with polite reminders of what is being played – a 52-year-old mono record. And with so many of this and similar titles trashed these days, it still puts this still fine copy in true perspective.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This psych classic plays mostly above it’s high respectable visual grading. Offering strong, warm, punchy, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is still high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As already stated, this does have some contact sound here-and-there as mild crackle and some sporadic clicks, but the vast majority plays without faults and certainly with no tracking issues*. The complex sound still strongly intact and clear. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. Evidence suggests this has been played a number of times and been enjoyed by the previous owner. With the majority of the surface marks being wispy and faint, most are ignored with just the odd tiny stylus mark causing the few contact sounds. Being honest, little spoilt my listening experience and pleasure when play-grading this scarce mono record. It still merits recommendation for those can tolerate a few light sound issues, but again as stated above, not for those who want vintage vinyl to sound as clean as a modern digital format or near perfect audio at any cost. I can hardly make it more clear can I?

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
