The Rolling Stones : Their Satanic Majesties Request 2K / 2K 2nd 'Mono' Press

This has to be the finest example of this classic album that I have ever played.  Admittedly it is not a first 1P/P1 mono pressing but this was produced right after that one and the sonic quality is just stunning on both sides.  There is no interference at all and the only 'background' I detected were a handful of mega light ticks on each side.  There are no clicks or pops and no underlying static either.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is second to none and this is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE version i.e. you could not find 'cleaner' more impressive audio!  Perhaps no surprise but the vinyl is visually stunning and has hardly been played based on the audio and the minimal spindle wear.

The iconic lenticular cover is in fantastic condition with barely any wear and the red psychedelic inner has also been preserved extremely well.  A stunning 'complete' early pressing.  A very early one also with just a single U stamper on each side.

This second pressing is a stereo mix that has been 'folded' down to one channel for mono sound.  This is denoted by the T2 code on the matrix.  There are differences in sound - the most obvious example is the bell tolls only twice on this mix as opposed to three times on a 'true' mono mix.

Visual description

The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with obvious marks or scratches.  S1 has a couple of short lines of very faint minor mottling but you can only see this when you hold the vinyl at a certain angle towards a bright light / sunlight.  Very minor indeed!  There are only a small number of faint hairlines on each side and with only very minimal spindle wear it is clear this has not been played very much at all.  I guess the audio confirms that also.  The run out grooves are super clean and the matrix info and KT tax stamp can easily be seen.  The blue grooved labels are in great condition with no marking / writing.

Play grading

The piano intro on 'Sing This All Together' plays with perfect clarity with not even a single dust tick and the opening vocal section is just as impressive.  So far so good!  The 'psychedelic' mid instrumental is 'as new' with no 'background' of any kind and the final vocal is of the same high end standard.  This is a superb start to this classic album (well I think it's a classic!) and the power and depth of the audio is incredibly strong.  This is Mint in every way no need for a minus.

'Citadel' plays with great power from the get go and this does not diminish as it progresses.  The opening section plays without fault and the brief silent section is... totally silent.  The remainder more than keeps up this standard and again there are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and the fade out has no 'background' either.  Another Mint track.

The intro on Wyman's 'In Another Land' has no 'background' and the first vocal also plays with sublime clarity.  It continues to play with impeccable quality and again I did not even hear a solitary dust tick.  The clarity of sound on this 2K/2K pressing thus far is STUNNING and this demonstrated during the 'snore' also, the 'cleanest' one I have ever heard!  Just a couple of minor ticks.  Let's say Mint- for the entire track.

The intro on '2000 Man' is 'as new' and Jagger's opening vocal is equal to that.  The first chorus plays with great depth and power and it continues in the same exact way.  From start to finish there is no interference and Mint is again deserved.

The quiet intro on 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)' is flawless and you can hear each note and 'voice' so clearly.  Having listened to the track in full I can safely say you could not wish to find a better version.  By now it is obvious that this vinyl has only been very sparingly played and it has lost none of its original sonic quality.  Running at nearly 8 minutes this track plays with STUNNING clarity all the way through with no interference and that includes the end vocal.  As it 'ends' there is complete silence for a few seconds and then the final 'instrumental' piece plays to perfection.  I'm not sure I have ever heard a Mint version on such an early pressing but we have one here!

----------------------------------------------------------

Another super clean run in on S2 and then the Carnival Barker intro on 'She's A Rainbow' has no 'background' and then the piano intro also plays with impeccable quality.  It continues in the same precise way through every vocal and instrumental section and again the clarity is just mind-blowing!  Hopkins' piano plays beautifully and I cannot overstate just how well this genuine classic plays.  Mint etc etc!

The iconic intro on 'The Lantern' is like it was pressed only yesterday!  Incredible clarity and that is carried on into the first vocal and beyond.  No need to elaborate this also grades as Mint as there is no 'background' to be heard not even during the very quiet sections.  The definitive version you could say.

'Gomper' has a couple of minor ticks on the intro and then plays with unrivalled quality from then onwards.  The sonic quality is so strong and the clarity is again on another level.  There is just nothing that detracts from the audio - the vocals and instrumental sections play 'as new' simple as that and the long fade out note at the end has no 'background' either.  I will grade as Mint- due to the two light ticks at the start.

I don't want to repeat myself but the intro on '2000 Light Years From Home' has to be the finest I have ever heard.  With only a couple of very light ticks the clarity is superb.  Jagger's opening vocal is comparable to that and it continues to play with tremendous depth and power with no sign of any interference aside from one mega light tick as the pace slows into the near silent section.  Can't call that interference though!  The remainder of this psychedelic classic plays without fault and again Mint- is a fair assessment of this STUNNING audio.

'On With The Show' ends the album with exceptional quality throughout.  No ticks, clicks, pops or static this is pure Mint audio with no inner groove distortion either.

In summary this very early 'mono' pressing plays to the highest standard possible in my opinion and easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE album.  In essence there is no interference, only a handful of very light ticks which obviously do not intrude on the audio quality.  This may not be a true mono mix but there is no denying the clarity and depth of sound, I have never heard better!  This is an LP that is so often affected by sound issues but that is not the case here and one of the reasons why I bought it originally was because it was so visually stunning.  I had a feeling it would play well and it certainly delivers on every level!

The Lenticular Gatefold & Red Inner Sleeve

This famous cover is lovely condition with only minimal shelf wear and is easily one of the best I have seen in a long time.  The edges are so clean with no obvious rubbing and the spine is also very impressive albeit ever so slightly compressed.  The corners have only the bare minimum of wear, they have been preserved very well, and only the bottom left one on the back cover has just a touch more.  The opening edge has no obvious handling wear either.  The front cover is very clean indeed with just a minor amount of laminate lift top left and an even smaller amount bottom left - a tiny crease there also.  The 3D image remains 100% attached to the cover and it's interesting to see it wasn't quite aligned correctly when it was first put on.  Only 2/3 mms out but you can see the right-angled lines on the cover itself on the top part of the image which indicated where exactly the image should have been placed.  This is probably quite common I imagine when you consider how many had to be put on in the factory!  The front cover is perfectly flat but that is common with this LP, certainly isn't bowed very much.  The back cover is again unmarked and is as glossy as the front but is slightly wavy, a common feature of this cover, but doesn't detract from the visual look.  The inside of the gatefold is immaculate and for once the inner spine is in perfect order.  A superb example overall and it would be difficult to find a more impressive one.

The red psychedelic inner is in superb condition with no side splits or marking and only very minimal creasing.  A surname and 61/68 has been written in one top corner but is relatively faint.
