The Rolling Stones : Their Satanic Majesties Request (1st Press 1P/P1)
This genuine first 1P/P1 mono pressing on the unboxed grooved Decca label plays with superb audio with hardly any interference. This is so impressive because the vinyl is not visually perfect by any means but I have fully play tested it and there is very little that intrudes on the stunning clarity and depth on offer here. It shows you how strong and robust vinyl from the 60s is!
A little history - the mono LP of 'Satanic' exists in two different versions. The original master tape was mixed twice, the first was used for mono records and the second for both mono and stereo. The first mix was used on mono records with the 1P/P1 stampers and this is known as the 'true' mono pressing. You can actually hear the difference between the two - 'The Lantern' bell tolls three times at the beginning (true) as opposed to twice on the (non-true) second mono mix.
As you can see S1 has only one stamper, this is relatively rare. So based on Decca's matrix system this side was pressed with the 9th stamper and S2 only the 11th. This is a very early first pressing as you can see.

Visual grading
Whilst the vinyl plays to a very high standard the vinyl does have a number of faint hairlines and a few that are more obvious. However, it is cleaner than many I have seen and there are no scratches, scuff marks or radial lines. Not surprisingly there is a fair amount of spindle wear but it is not excessive. This certainly is not visually perfect but as detailed below the audio is very impressive and there is not one single loud click or pop!
Play grading
'Sing This All Together' has hardly any static on the quiet intro and as the vocal comes in the audio is stunning. It just goes to show how strong and robust vinyl from the 60s is. The entire track plays with wonderful clarity and there is not a single click or pop and no crackle either. This grades as Near Mint without question.
'Citadel' has only a hint of static on the intro and from then on plays with great clarity and no obvious intrusion. There is a little static in the middle 'silent' section but it certainly isn't loud. Audiophiles often say mono records play with more 'sound' and you can see what they mean with track. There is so much 'going on' and yet there is a great depth to the sound. Just a little static right at the end of the fade out. This is easily Ex+ although the majority plays better than that!
'In Another Land' begins superbly with no 'background' and continues in the same way. This is such a powerful version and again the clarity deserves a special mention here, it is so impressive! There are no clicks or pops and even the 'snore' has only minimal static. The very quiet acoustic guitar can clearly be heard in the background. I will err on the side of caution and grade this as Ex+ although I am sure many would grade it as Near Mint.
The intro on '2000 Man' is another highlight and yet again the clarity is stunning with no 'background'. As Jagger comes in there is no decrease in quality and the playback is absolutely stunning. The production on this album is so strong and no more obvious than on this track. The audio separation is 'high end' i.e. each note can be heard so clearly. A Near Mint version of this classic.
'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)' has only minimal static on the intro and as the volume increases the audio cannot be faulted. From then on the audio is so sharp and precise and there are no clicks or pops etc and definitely no skips or jumps, something you often find with this generally heavily played vinyl! Even as the volume decreases the clarity remains the same with no intrusion. It may not be everyone's favourite track but it nonetheless plays with superb quality. A little distortion towards the end perhaps but nothing intrusive. There are a couple of gentle 'ticks' in the very quiet section prior to the final vocal but this vocal then plays very clearly with no interference, just a minimal touch of mega light static right at the end. The short instrumental section then ends the side with barely any static. I will grade this track as Ex+ but again the majority is better than that and plays with Near Mint quality. No clicks or pops!

The spoken 'intro' on 'She's A Rainbow' has hardly any static and as the piano comes in the playback is stunning. This incredible clarity continues up until the piano/strings section where there is a little static but it is not intrusive and, I hasten to add, there are no clicks or pops. The remainder plays practically 'as new' with only 2/3 seconds of mega light static. This is such an impressive version and I must mention the clarity again. It cannot be faulted and rarely have I heard this classic play so clearly and with such 'high end' quality on a genuine first pressing.
'The Lantern' has a little more obvious static on the intro but...no clicks or pops and it soon decreases. As the vocal begins the audio is superb. There are a number of quiet sections of course and yet they all play so clearly and with barely any 'background'. The only 'real' static is right at the end of the track. A superb version overall.
'Gomper' has only a little static on the intro and it continues in the same way. Any static is only very minimal and the playback is of an wonderful standard. For a record of 52 years that has been played a number of times the clarity is very impressive. The long 'instrumental' section is stunning and no intrusive 'background' whatsoever and again there is only light static on the quiet section at the end. Another Ex+ track but the instrumental section is Near Mint.
The intro on '2000 Light Years From Now' plays very clearly with only minor static, a handful of mega light 'ticks' and one light click also. That makes it sound a lot worse than it actually is! This 'background' is only minor and not that intrusive in my opinion. As my regular customers know I list any imperfections however minor and the playback is often better than my description. The vocal sections then play with superb Near Mint quality and the next quiet section has only a couple of light clicks. The clarity is still excellent. The remainder plays with fantastic quality and the quiet end section in particular is absolutely stunning. What an ending!
'On With The Show' has a perfect Mint- intro and then plays with mega impressive clarity. The sonic quality here is 'high end' and its rare for this final track to play as well as this. There is no obvious inner groove distortion on the actual music, just a little on the 'crowd' section at the end. Overall a highly commendable version of this track.
In summary the audio on this classic album will not disappoint. Despite the hairlines the clarity and definition of the audio cannot really be faulted and so few of these genuine first pressings play as well as this today. Yes this one is marked but in no way is it as heavily marked as so many I have seen and there are no scratches or scuffs. It just goes to show how 60s vinyl was built to last! The gatefold is also very clean overall with only one small split on the bottom edge of the back cover.
The Gatefold
The lenticular 3-D gatefold is in excellent condition overall with only a little shelf wear. Three of the edges are in superb order with hardly any rubbing and it is only the bottom edge of the back cover that has some obvious rubbing and a 3cm split towards opening edge. The spine has only a couple of minor scuffs and a little rubbing on the two corners. The other corners have no obvious wear apart from the one on the back cover as mentioned. The front cover has no marking and the laminate is in great shape with no splits or lifts. The 3D image is also in perfect condition. The opening edge has hardly any handling wear and this is a surprise in a way as the record has been played numerous times. Obviously removed very carefully each time! The laminated back cover has no marking and the inside of gatefold is in near immaculate perfect condition with only very minimal rubbing by the inner spine. Not perfect (how many are?!) but for a genuine first press 3D cover there is really only one area of obvious wear and the remainder is very clean indeed.
Inner Sleeve
At first glance the original red inner looks to be in great order, it certainly is very clean with no marking. However, there are two splits - an 8cm one on the bottom edge and a 7cm side split. One mega tiny tear on the top edge also. There is barely any creasing.
The Labels
The grooved blue labels are very clean with no marking or writing. As stated there is a fair amount of spindle wear but not excessive by any means.
