The Rolling Stones : Their Satanic Majesties Request 1P/P1 1st Press Mono

This first mono pressing plays to a superb standard with hardly any interference.  The only intrusion really is on the intro of 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)' on S1 but it does not last long.  Aside from that this very collectable album plays to a fantastic standard and indeed the majority plays to a Near Mint / Mint standard.  The vinyl does have some light marking/hairlines but this has barely any affect on the audio as detailed below.

The famous 3D cover is easily the best example I have seen and has no obvious shelf wear, hopefully the photos do it justice.  It is stunning!  The red psychedelic inner is also in great condition with no side splits or marking.

As this is a genuine first press the bell tolls three times on 'The Lantern' intro and of course it has the 1P/P1 matrix.  This is also one of the earliest off the 'press' as it has only a single stamper on each side, U and I.

For once the lead in grooves are so clean with no discernible 'background' at all.  A good sign of things to come you could say!  The intro on 'Sing This All Together' then plays perfectly with no intrusion and opening vocal is equally as good.  In fact I can confidently say the clarity is 'as new'.  The sonic quality is STUNNING and there is just no interference whatsoever.  The mid instrumental is of the same 'high end' standard and the final vocal again has no interference.  This is without doubt the finest version of this opening track that I have ever heard and Mint- is an easy grade to give.

The classic 'Citadel' has only a minimal touch of mega light static on the intro - about two seconds worth - and the first verse and chorus play loud and true with no distortion and...no interference.  The next vocal is again flawless and the brief 'silent' section at the half way point has only a little static.  The remainder of this classic plays incredibly well with only a couple of seconds of light static during one of the classic riffs from Richards plus a little static on the fade out.  The majority is Near Mint but will grade that one brief interlude as VG+ - a superb rendition overall.

The intro on 'In Another Land' is 'as new' and the first vocal from Wyman is almost as good with just one light tick.  What has stood out so far is just how sharp and precise the audio is which all points to a record that has not been over-played.  Each note is so clean, the definition of the audio is so strong.  There is of course so much 'going on' with this classic track and yet there is no 'muddiness' to the sound at all.  There is just a minimal amount of light background static during the mid vocal section but as for the rest?  Absolutely stunning!  Again the clarity and depth of the audio is exceptional and even the 'snore' finale has only a little static.  The actual track is Near Mint and then Ex on the 'sleeping' end section.

The acoustic intro on '2000 Man' is faultless and it continues to play with a quality that is second to none.  There is no interference and if I've ever heard a version as good as this I cannot remember when!  With only a couple of dust ticks this is audio of the highest calibre and the clarity, depth and power of the audio is sensational!  This is one you can turn up to max without fear of distortion!  I'm sorry if I get a little overenthusiastic at times but when you hear classics like this playing with such quality I can be forgiven!  The only 'background' is a hint of light static at the end of fade out but it fully deserves a Mint- grade - what a version!

The quiet intro on 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)' does have a little static and a click once per revolution but as the music starts the music is faultless I am pleased to say.  As always I listened to every second in order to provide a 'complete' grading and the clarity is unlike anything I have heard before!  In all honesty I detected things I have never noticed before and that is due to the stunning clarity on offer here.  The playback is again so clean and during the louder sections there is no distortion which is a genuine rarity.  There are a couple of crackle sounds just prior to the vocal near the end but the vocal itself then plays with perfect precision.  After a few seconds of 'near' silence (just a couple of light ticks) the final instrumental ends the side with faultless audio.  The intro can only be graded as VG- but the main 'bulk' of the track is Near Mint although the vast majority is stronger than that truth be told!

The 'spoken' intro on 'She's A Rainbow' has only a hint of barely audible static right at the start and the piano section then plays beautifully with no intrusion.  The same can be said for every vocal and instrumental section that follow.  The clarity and depth is very comparable to S1 and there is quite simply no interference.  The classical mid instrumental is a case in point - the clarity here is phenomenal.  It continues in the same precise way and again the sonic quality is just unbelievable!  I do not wish to repeat myself but how often do you get audio like this on a 1P/P1 first mono pressing?  I detected only a couple of mega quiet dust ticks and very much deserves a Mint- grade.

The 'three' bell toll intro section on 'The Lantern' plays very clearly with only minimal static and the first vocal passage has no 'background' of any kind.  From then on it plays with imperious quality and there are no clicks or pops and no underlying static either.  I cannot overstate just how well it plays!  Every section plays beautifully and that includes the quieter acoustic section 3/4 of the way through.  An Ex+ intro but the remainder is Mint- for sure.

'Gomper' keeps up this fine standard with great clarity from start to finish.  Again there are no clicks or pops, just a couple of minor static 'sounds' before the long instrumental section.  From then onwards there is so much to like!  This 'psychedelic' section is so 'clean' and precise - the clarity is amazing and there is in essence no interference at all.  A couple of ticks on fade out but this is another example of a Near Mint track playing better than that for the majority.

The long opening note on '2000 Light Years From Home' has only very minimal static and the rest of the intro plays to near perfection.  As Jagger comes in the playback is flawless and the depth of the audio is so impressive.  It has lost none of its original quality and Wyman's deep bass adds so much to the mix.  It continues to play with a clarity that just rolls back the years!  The quiet interlude is close to perfect with only a couple of very light static ticks and the rest of the track is outstanding!  There is no interference and the quiet instrumental ending is just sublime, never heard better.  Another Near Mint / Mint- track in my opinion.

The 'spoken' intro into 'On With The Show' has no interference and thereafter plays with incredible precision and depth.  The audio is so strong with no intrusion at all.  Perhaps there is just a minor amount of inner groove distortion but really it is so minimal and remember this is a mono record being played on a stereo set up.  A Near Mint finish to this classic album.

In summary this first mono pressing plays to a fantastic standard with barely any interference.  In fact the only real intrusion is the first few seconds on the final track of S1 and aside from that the clarity, definition and power of the audio is up there with the best 1P/P1 pressing I have ever listened to.  It may not be visually perfect (never seen one!) but wow does it play well!  It may not have been popular with the critics and many fans when first released but in my opinion this first pressing is the hardest to find in decent condition.  They are regularly found in poor condition with a lot of static/crackle, clicks and pops but this is definitely not one of those!  S1 plays to superb standard and S2 is even better!

The Gatefold & Red Inner Sleeve

This iconic 3D cover is in fantastic condition and remains very strong and robust which can only be because it has not been handled very much.  The edges are close to perfect and the spine is also in superb order with no wear at all, how rare is that?!  The corners are so clean with barely any wear and the opening edge has no handling wear.  It just has 3/4 minor 'waves' where it is ever so slightly unattached from the back cover which was 'pasted' on to it.  Like I say so minor and scarcely worth a mention.  The front cover is in beautiful condition with barely any laminate 'lift' next to the spine which makes a change and just one faint crease top right which you can only see when you hold it at a certain angle.  The 3D image itself remains firmly attached to the cover and is in perfect condition also.  The back cover is perfect with no laminate damage.  The inside of the gatefold is just as impressive and for once the maze is still intact with no marking.  I would go so far as to say this is the finest example of this cover that I have ever seen!

The original psychedelic red inner is of course made of paper and is rarely found without any side splits or tears.  This is the exception to the rule and is near perfect with only a minimal amount creasing.  No side splits or marking!
