Brief Info: Arguably the best ever Rolling Stones album, their ninth and first not include any contributions from their founding member Brian Jones who sadly passed away in 1969. It introduced Mick Taylor as a full-time member of the band and also now on their own label. A true classic material-wise, and also with one of the most famous album covers in rock history. This a really impressive example of, all details further down. A copy appearing little played, but Rolling Stones Records were somewhat inconsistent on pressing quality, and were seldom, if ever, up to the very high standard of previous albums on Decca. This an album known to sometimes have pressing issues, finding one with none is difficult, often pressing noises with nothing obvious seen on the playing surfaces, but audible. This one does have a little inherent crackle here-and-there, purely within the pressing, and far from unusual. This is not crackle that can be removed by any form of cleaning, it is simply a pressing issue. But the majority of this copy plays very well, but not perfect, so not for the most discerning listener or audiophile purist. Still a nice copy however, and the packaging impressive as seen. Indeed the cover could prove an upgrade for some, the lack of ugly and damaging zip marks on the back is very unusual and difficult to find – more on that further down.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single unlaminated format with the standard real zip fly as seen in close-up. The inside has a card divider with underpants artwork and Andy Warhol credit. The area above the zipper is cut to resemble a belt buckle, all surfaces are matt and smooth. Printed and made in England, includes the insert sheet and plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One of the most damage-prone and fragile covers of the time. This one fully intact with no tearing or damage, and minimal wear. The cut and shaped belt part above the zip has little creasing, any present, fine and light. This area is the part that often gets torn, often with chunks missing altogether (or crudely repaired). Often catching protective covers that sheers-off this delicate part, this area is very impressive. The zipper is superb: this often tarnishes, even rusting badly, here almost unaged and clean as seen. Also as demonstrated, this one still opens and closes freely and easily, many fuse together with rust, becoming unmoveable, far from the case on this one. The rest of the front has few marks or creases, any present fine and faint, there are no sticker marks. Slight thickening of the top entrance edge towards the left corner, but little else. Overall, this famous front cover artwork and design looks impressive, and importantly intact and minimally aged.

Cover Back: Overall, this is one of the best backs I have seen on this cover, certainly for some time anyway. Firstly, for those unfamiliar with detail, the white line on the right buttock is NOT a scratch mark, it is simply part of the artwork. The most noteworthy feature on this example is almost the lack of marks from another zip pressing against it. Just one tiny press mark only that hardly even shows. When manufactured, these covers would have been stacked or packaged next to each other, so only the lucky few or back ones would have avoided penetrating scratches or multiple dotted marks from other zippers. I even know a few collectors from the past who actually removed the zip to stop it damaging other covers by accident. Finding this back cover with so few blemishes either by rubbing or other zipper covers is almost a rarity. Any general wear, marks or creases on this near exceptional back are few, fine and faint – a ring rim rub near the top – but a cover that often suffers heavy ring wear, this has escaped it well. A small tone mark near the left edge where a manufacture adhesive smear has darkened with age, that natural, and hardly unusual, this is only small and light. Both front and back have far more positive than any minor negatives and will both prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Inside: The inside has two separate areas, the divider has the underpants artwork which I have tried to show, it appears practically unworn, apart from unavoidable pressing of the metal zipper.

Top Edges: These are the opening edges, so a little patchy thickening, mostly near the ends is incredibly hard to avoid. These are guaranteed 100% natural, untrimmed or enhanced.

Bottom Edges: A very thin storage edge that is straight with any rubbing patchy and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Again neat and straight with minimal wear.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends tapered in manufacture, the top has moderately rubbed. Little else however, and all text is perfect and unworn as seen. Also note the correct COC prefix.

Corners: Light (bottom pair) to moderate (top) rubbing with fine to very fine shape largely retained. No bashes, any evidence of dinks light.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this unforgiving, wear and damage-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Just enough to politely remind of age, but importantly intact without real damage or ugly scratching of the back surface. Overall impressive to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a basic plain white unlined inner with barely anything to fault

The Insert Sheet: NEAR MINT: printed in England by Richard Davis Ltd with matt surfaces both sides. This looks practically as-made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Most of any minor blemishes in the pressing, there are no penetrating stylus marks. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album mostly plays to it’s visual grading or above. But, as stated further up, it does have a little sporadic crackle here-and-there purely within the pressing – this is far from unusual and even relatively common, this is a known variable pressing and can often be pretty bad. This is far from that – a little heard at the start of ‘You Gotta Move’, and sporadic, very brief traces elsewhere. But the vast majority plays very well (or I would not offer it). Finding a copy with pristine sound throughout is a lottery and a considerable challenge. Put simply: I wish this classic album was still on Decca because that label rarely, if ever disappointed. No tracking issues*, but a little crackle here-and-there that no cleaning will ever remove, I am sure many collectors will familiar with it on this album. So not one for very discerning listeners or audiophile purists, but the majority plays great, including most of the quieter songs. Proving again a full-play-grade is essential, there are scant to know clues about pressing imperfections, this is a lovely looking record – and sound is largely the same – but any winning bidder, expect a little crackle in places – that simply being honest and fair.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
