Label/Format: Decca – original first press format with the deep ring ridge that actually feels quite sharp against the fingertip. This detail was later removed or changed on later pressings. These have the usual matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both are very clean, fresh and attractive with no writing or damage marks, the ink fully intact and strong and no wear or erosion around the hole. But, I guess there has to be a ‘but’, there a quite a lot of spindle marks, more than I would normally be happy to offer. And but again, this does not always mean the record has been played excessively or without due care. In fact this vintage mono record plays beautifully throughout. As per most records I buy to offer, I had the opportunity to play-test this record in full on my own very sensitive equipment (as all listed further down). A simple fact: many owners used the labels to guide the hole to the spindle, often a trick process depending what record player was used at the time. Radiograms were particularly difficult to locate and align, as I remember from my early days in the 1960s as my parents owned one. This particular record totally blows away any theories of spindle marks to number-of-play ratios, both sides of the record have very few marks, those present being fine and faint with no affect on sound. And the actual music is still fully focused, sharp and precise, I would go still further and stay, this is one of cleanest sounding unboxed Stones No. 2 monos I have yet heard. So have no fears on the spindle marks which are numerous, but relatively fine and faint. Judge this superb record by it’s splendid sound and the equally impressive rare cover as detailed in full further down.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. This a typically solid, high-quality Decca pressing.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most-all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference. Finding the true first issues that offer lovely clean sound is extremely difficult – these early beat classics were amongst the most heaviest played and ‘party-pieces’ made. Many loaned out and played to near destruction on massively heavyweight tracking Dansettes, often with blunt stylus stubs. Early Stones albums were recorded loudly with a very raw sound, the grooves and that precious mono sound more intolerant of abuse, few will heard in anything like original condition. Well this beauty has little to fault, and although it (may) appear played a number of times if spindle marks are to be trusted, it has been so with due care and I would strongly reiterate, on a way better than average record player. There lies the difference. Both playing surfaces are impressive and blow away their vintage and there is NO disputing the age of this one with such early matrixes (details further down), and the definitive deep outer ring ridge. Also this copy is a little more ‘special’: when first printed, the cover included the infamous ‘Blind Man’s’ text, which quite rightly was deemed offensive. The text refers to stealing a blind man’s wallet after a blow and kick. So in haste, as a quick ‘fix’, the remaining ‘Blind Man’ covers were pasted over by hand to cover up the offensive text. When these ran out, the cover was totally reprinted with new text that omitted the ‘Blind Man’ reference. In a similar way to The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday and Today’ ‘Butcher’ cover in the United States, these cover-up covers are quite scarce and now sort-after. So all original No. 2 albums were sent to the shops with the offensive text, meaning most early copies seen will include it – and most do, let’s be honest. Far, far less of these improvised censored ones show up. The entire back panel is covered up with a large paste-on sheet, they even go over the laminate end on the spine edge, and rarely would they ever be ‘perfect’. I would be as certain as I ever could be, factory workers would have quickly hand-pasted these on to keep sales moving and to stop wastage of the original cover. When used, they simply printed the new version. So in terms of collectability, this is quite a piece of Rolling Stones history, and elusive as well. Apart from simply observing there has been a new panel pasted on which is more than obvious, you can also see the original text that lies beneath in some plain white areas. This is not too easy to photograph, but be assured, this detail is present when seen for real. The extra text below the ‘Andrew Loog Oldham’ credit is easily seen – the new replacement text having fewer words and taking up less vertical space. This rarer piece of early cover censorship is not easily found this clean or less aged, a really strong all-round copy.

Brief Info: As the title suggests, this is the second UK Rolling Stones album with more classic RnB covers and three Jagger/Richards songs. A lovely early example in all aspects, the most important being sound. As stated above, the cover has the rarer paste-over rear panel to obscure the infamous blind man’s text. An early example of cover censorship in the UK and more than a specialist piece for Rolling Stones collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the closed edges and ends via the spine. This one has a smooth back with no flipbacks, these were slightly less flimsy but are still quite delicate. Printed and made in England, the new back panel is uncredited. As stated above, this includes the infamous ‘Blind Man’ text cover that has been covered over for censorship with the new paste-on back panel to obscure the offensive text. The original polylined inner sleeve is included as well.

Lamination & Front: A very fine and little-aged front: as so often, there is lifting on the spine as Clarifoil laminate in particular has a habit of tightening due contraction, these and similar early Decca covers are seldom seen without the odd lift as best. The lifted laminate has not cracked or ‘broken’, so still solid and with due care, will remain the same. This has avoided bowing and still lies very flat, which is less common as well. The laminate retains very fine shine, freshness and clarity with hardly any dulling, even under light, a trace around the rim only. A laminate crease near the top edge, most of the quite few others being lighter, fine and faint. With many of these covers seen almost in tatters, this front can be deemed impressive and the famous vintage band graphic will never prove easy to find a great deal better.

Cover Back: The exposed back with large areas of white has aged very little, the new paste-on panel is mostly clean, fresh and with minimal traces of grubbiness and no toning. This included the highly controversial ‘Blind Man’ text which reads: “Cast deep in your pockets for loot to buy this disc of grooves and fancy words. If you don’t have bread, see that blind man knock him on the head, steal his wallet and low and behold you have the loot, if you put in the boot, good, another one sold!)” Really quite amazing how this was allowed to be sold in the first place, in today’s world of correctness, I am sure it would not be. When enough outcry emerged, the back was covered over – as per this copy – with a new paste-on sheet with the offending text removed, then it was reprinted without it at all. These are quite rare compared to the standard uncensored versions and clearly a variant piece for Rolling Stones collectors. As stated already, in some plain white areas, the original text does show through but is quite faint as to make photographing this detail difficult. In terms of real wear and creasing, this back has hardly any at all.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both are smooth and retaining full laminate with no scuffs. Also unusually straight and neat. Clarifoil will contract and pull resulting in bowing to many which has been avoided. The off friction trace mark on the bottom edge being critical seen viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, generally sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring light and little as seen viewed end-on. Doing so also reveals just how thin this fragile card is as well. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: I have rarely, if ever seen a straighter less bowed spine on this cover, this is so unusual. Very solid with only a tiny hint of gentle compression in places, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, still very clear laminate. No cracking or creasing at all, another considerable plus.

Corners: The perilous corners retain excellent shape with minimal hint of wear. No knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: Always hard to find these old covers this clean with such little wear. I do not consider lifting wear, it is almost a natural trait of vintage laminate on thin card covers. This still attractive and rarer variant should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a general mild darkening that few can hope to avoid. This is guaranteed the original as well – it has NO reference to ‘stereo’ at all with all text details regarding mono usage. It has two pristine window circles, very clear polylining and no edge splits or repairs. Includes a British patent and ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this I feel for a very popular 50-year-old record, is being ultra cautious and conservative. With most seen in very poor, shocking and trashed states these days, this is on the side of the vinyl spectrum. Okay, it has numerous spindle marks on the labels, but that tells a false story. Any of the small few light surface marks mainly gentle with no penetrating stylus scratches, hence superficial and non-sounding. This is an impressive, deep cut ridge label original, I am not going to guess on number of plays, but I will say this appears to be have been played mainly with due care and on a better record player. Both surfaces are very clean, fresh with excellent shine, and it plays great. Few dating right back to the earlier issue time, will better this for lovely looks. One to please many collectors for sure.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays impressively with very little to fault. Strong, very clean sound - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed production. This has a lovely raw presentation that was just perfect for its vintage. Quite low-fi, but that is how Oldham and the Band wanted it to be. Jagger’s vocals arguably a little over ‘miked’, and spiky, but almost certainly deliberate to sound more forward on the record players around at the time – indeed the Oldham Decca Marianne Faithfull albums have the same type of sound. Recorded loud and full-on with a punchy sonic delivery of the music and vocals. It does sound quite basic, especially when played on a highly revealing Linn LP12 stereo turntable that I use for all my records. A mono record not really designed to played on such equipment, but this stood-up impressively well, even under such close scrutiny. I noticed no loss of clarity with any unwanted sound minuscule and this is an exceptional clean pressing – I would expect little else from Decca. No piledriver thick, heavy needles have ruined this one and no tracking issues*. Remember also, this album was not issued in stereo, so some copies would not have even been exposed to mono Dansettes and the like. Although of course I cannot prove the point, I would be very confident this copy has not been played on a mono record player at all. The sound is just so clean and unspoiled. I have always found this one of the most difficult Rolling Stones albums to find this clean, probably due to the considerable age and the forward sound that is easily damaged. But nothing of any note spoilt the experience – unless digital silence is mandatory – and good luck with that on a record like this. Indeed, this could even prove an upgrade for many. Just the merest hint to remind what you are actually listening to – a 50-year-old mono (and very popular) record. It will take an immense, near unplayed copy to better this significantly, and it merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
