Visual description

The vinyl is visually stunning and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  Even looking closely under a bright light I can only see a handful of ultra faint hairlines and it is obvious this record has not been removed from the cover many times at al.  The yellow labels are so clean and have hardly any spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Dancing With Mr. D' has only a couple of very quiet statics at the start and Jagger's opening vocal has no intrusion at all.  The first chorus is perfect and it continues to play with a genuine deep, rich quality.  There is no interference and Mint- is very much deserved.

'100 years Ago' plays with stunning precision - no dust ticks, static ticks, clicks, pops or static.  Pure Mint audio from start to finish.  It is a little Stones by numbers but there is no denying the sonic quality here.

The piano intro on 'Coming Down Again' plays beautifully with no background and the first vocal is equal to that.  Richards' verse verse is perfect and from then on the clarity does not falter.  Every vocal and instrumental section play 'as new' and remember this is a relatively 'sparse' track.  A measure of the clarity is the fade out which does not even have a dust tick let alone anything more.  A sublime Mint version.

The intro and opening vocal on 'Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)' are perfect and the first verse chorus is of the same standard.  It continues in the same way - the power and depth of the audio is outstanding and there is no distortion on the top end.  This is more like it!  Classic Stones and another Mint track.

The acoustic intro on 'Angie' is superb!  No dust ticks the clarity is 'as new' and Jagger's first emotive vocal is up to the task also.  From then on it plays with incredible clarity and warmth and for a final track the sonic quality is STUNNING!  It plays beautifully with nothing to detract from the crystal clear audio.  This classic is Mint in every way.

'Silver Train' plays with 10/10 precision from the first note to the last with... no interference.  A typical high powered Stones track that plays so damn well!  A very impressive Mint start to S2.

The piano intro on 'Hide Your Love' has no intrusion and the opening vocal is 'as new' also.  From then on the audio is so clean and 'fresh' and there is just one mega light tick towards the end, so quiet you could easily miss.  Despite that I will still grade as Mint-

The classic 'Winter' plays with stunning precision from the get go.  With just one minor static on the first verse the clarity and definition is high indeed indeed and I'm going to say Mint.... because I can :-)

The very quiet intro on 'Can You Hear The Music' plays with incredible clarity and as Richards' guitar comes in and the volume increases playback is just as strong.  From then on it plays so well with zero interference.  Perhaps the clarity is just a shade down but I'm sure that's just because we're approaching the end of the side.  The quiet ending again plays with sublime clarity.  It is still a superb version and Mint- is still very much deserved.

'Star Star' plays with genuine quality throughout with no sign of any interference.  There is a little inner groove distortion on the vocal but you kind of expect that but I don't think it should be downgraded as a result.  That's vinyl!  It plays with great power and you can still easily play it loud without having to turn it down immediately!  A Mint- conclusion to a super clean album.

In summary this first pressing plays to a superb standard with no interference, quite impressive for a 50 year old record!  As per the other Stones' LPs from this collection it has hardly been played and has thus retained its original sonic integrity shall we say.  Yes a modicum of distortion on the final track but as stated that is impossible to avoid.  Together with a fine cover and inserts the winning bidder will not be disappointed.

The Gatefold, Inserts & Inner Sleeve

The cover is in superb condition and has been so well looked after.  The edges have only minimal wear - a couple of minor rubs on the top and just a little more on the bottom edges.  The wide spine is so clean and all corners are in great shape with barely any wear.  The opening edge is immaculate.  The front cover has only a handful of faint indents near the top caused by a Sticky Fingers zip plus one faint score line and the back cover has just a couple of 'scores'.  The inside of the cover is perfect - a stunning example overall.

The two inserts are in perfect condition for once and the plain white die-cut inner just has some minor creasing.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
