Label Conditions: All four are very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two very light, fine and faint spindle marks. For a very popular album, this appears hardly played, reiterated by very clean and impressive sound and one of the best pressings I have heard for some time. This quite mass-produced double set often suffers crackle and less than great sound, but this one apart from a micro-blemish at the very end of side four, plays superbly. The blemish being, just as the final song fades and ends, the stylus jumps to the run out groove, any loss of sound on this song is minuscule. Even under a magnifier, there is no culprit visible for this.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 139 / 138 grams. Actually one of the heaviest pressed copies of this I have held. Most copies of this are pressed very thin and light.

Country of Manufacture: England

Rarity: Moderately scarce, complete early copies are harder. These initially included a full strip of post cards that are getting increasingly rare, especially in mint condition and fully intact. These cards that depict scenes from the ‘Fall From Exile on Main Street’ are so often missing, separated or incomplete. This vintage copy includes all 12, all still se tenant (holding together) and as-made. The records cleanly pressed than most I have heard (the tiny blemish as the record ends on side four apart, and it really is a minor issue). Being honest, the new label was more inconsistent for pressing quality, whereas Decca rarely was. This very early copy also has the very wide spine cover – again a blemish with a surface pull-tear to one bottom corner – that apart, impressive. Few escape without major creasing, sticker issues, and considerable damage to the fragile spine areas. This more elusive complete copy is still impressive, but not for purists of perfectionists with the cover tear.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Regarded by many as their greatest ever. Unlike previous albums, this rampaging double set offers a thicker sound mix and balance that has always been something of a mystery. Faster material, more up-tempo, laden with riffs this is uplifting and entertaining and does include some wonderful songs. ‘Exile’ offered a new sound and direction which most fans loved, and most thought it worked perfectly. This is an impressive complete copy with both inners and one set of 12, still joined post cards, two very well pressed (the one tiny blemish apart as stated) early records and a nice neat cover. For Stones fans needing this classic, this a very fine all-round example, not perfect, but it will prove difficult to better.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: marked down for the surface pull-tear on the back bottom left corner. Without this, I would have graded with at least one plus, maybe two, and still one of the better ones I have seen for a some considerable time. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces, central storage and a single thickness front. This early example has the wide spine and opposite edge, later ones were much narrower. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. Includes the graphic inners, white paper inners and a full set of fully attached cards.

Cover Front: A couple of fine edge creases apart, that show little, this superb looking front has hardly anything else to fault. Given its fragility, this really has defied it’s years and will take a lot of beating.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same but has a small mark on the top left corner and a moderate surface tear on the bottom left. The opposite corner tip may have a small tip-in enhancement, but that not certain, but likely. However, the main surface is as impressive as the front with hardly anything to fault. The lack of ugly ring wear is a plus, but the tear means this cover is NOT for the highly discerning or purists.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb, and I cannot see anything of note to fault. The central storage area is strong and unworn, another plus for a cover that is hardly really robust enough to hold all the contents.

Top Edges: Thick and straight with minimal compression to the wider, boxy edge. Any rubbing minimal and light.

Bottom Edges: This storage edge is actually very impressive and still holding its shape well with barely any hint of compression or wear bar one very small chip-rub. This perilous edge will prove hard to find better.

Right Edge(s), and Type (the spine): A sealed edge where most records are stored, these are entered from the centre of the gatefold. This edge has the text which is all full present with no rubbing, also well centred for a change. A crease and minor compression just below centre, but in terms terms of wear, little at all and hardly rubbed.

Left Edge: Very similar to the spine in terms of condition.

Corners: Given the format, the tips have fared well with impressive neat shape retained with no bashes. I have mentioned the blemishes are these areas above.

Cover Summary: A fine example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that is likely to prove difficult to find much better, even with the surface tear. A notoriously difficult and uncompromising cover, the wider spine originals especially are seldom found without major damage and general wear. This one not for perfectionists, but still a very fine example to please many fans and collectors.

The Illustrated Cards: PRACTICALLY MINT: all still joined with all semi-perferations intact and very strong. Clean, fresh with no creasing. The white backs are ultra clean and fresh as well, all parts are unaged. Again these are seldom found like this and in most cases missing altogether or incomplete. Now becoming very scarce and very sort after, these are a major and integral part of this set, all all looking virtually as-made. Copies without them are relatively common, with them, a different matter altogether.

The Card Graphic Inner Sleeves: Both PRACTICALLY MINT, unsplit, clean and fresh and barely creased at all.

The Paper White Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): unsplit edges, neat crisp window circles and the paper with minimal discolouration. Any creasing little and light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): retaining fine shine and very solidly pressed compared to most, any surface blemishes are very fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality very high for virtually all songs. Both records appear hardly played, and remain visually impressive, they should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark classic album plays up to, and most even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault bar the jump into the run out groove on side four as the song has practically ended on the fade. I have probably never heard a ‘perfect’ copy of this album all the way through – many have considerable crackle and pressing noises which this has avoided. The very brief small blemish apart, this up there with the best I have ever heard. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any contact sound minimal to none, this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* bar the final groove on side four as mentioned. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been mostly well stored and the records certainly carefully handled. Knowing this album well enough, I know they will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, unless ‘perfection’ is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
