Label/Format: Rolling Stones - all have the cut recessed inner ring ridge. Please see label scan, all are very similar.

Label Conditions: All four are clean, fresh and attractive with just a tiny hint of grubbiness on side one near the very hole rim. That apart, little else to fault with any spindle marks few, light and faint. The playing surfaces on this much heavier than average copy are immaculate and the sound I can honesty state, is the very best I have ever heard on this album which can often prove noisy from thinner pressings.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 155 / 140 grams. Way above average, my first ever disc to get anywhere near 150 grams, let alone exceed it. This set is usually thinnly pressed with weights 20 to 30 grams lighter. And just for good measure, both records play with supreme sound which I do not consider a coincidence.

Rarity: I guess logic would say a fairly common album, it charted at one in the UK and US, and for sure it does show up reasonably often. But the early pressed copies included a strip of postcards depicting scenes from the ‘Fall From Exile on Main Street’ and they are not easily found now especially fully intact and complete. How many of these would have been separated, used and lost? This vintage copy includes all 12, all still se tenant (holding together). The records superbly pressed and appearing very little played and offering the best sound you will ever hear. The cover is notoriously prone to wear and damage, especially the spine which here has little to fault. A very gentle sticker mark (but no tear) on the front shows little. Both inners and inner-inners are included also. Such examples are now getting scarcer to find, and for me nothing is more important than audio quality for which excels and will prove near impossible to find better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Regarded by many as their greatest ever album. Unlike previous albums, this rampaging double set offers a thicker sound mix and balance that has always been something of a mystery. Faster material, more up-tempo, laden with riffs this is a very uplifting and entertaining and does include some wonderful songs. ‘Exile’ offered a new sound and direction which most fans loved, and most thought it worked perfectly. This is an impressive complete copy with both inners and one set of 12, still joined postcards, two immaculate thickly pressed early records and a very fine, little worn, neat, clean cover. All four sides play beautifully, devoid of irritating crackle that blight so many, never take this for granted on this one. For Stones fans needing this gem, well this one sets a very high standard and will not be beaten easily.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (or very close too) and one of the better ones I have seen for some time. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfacea and central storage and a single thickness front. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. Includes the inners and a full set of cards.

Cover Front: The quite fragile front has little to fault bar a very light sticker residue mark. No tearing, just a faint light brown mark, like a toning mark near the bottom right corner, it shows very little. Any edge or tip rubbing very light indeed as are any super-fine surface creases that again hardly even register. This famous cover front will prove quite hard to find much better.

Cover Back: Clean, attractive with little to fault. Any blemishes few and very light indeed and the lack of ringwear is a real bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A small few gentle surface creases, almost certainly there from manufacture, show little and this centrefold is very impressive with again, little to fault at all. The major factor is the lack of damage and barely any wear to the vulnerable central spine area entrance that has remained untorn and quite solid. With two much heavier than average records inside here for 40 years, that is not mean achievement, but emphasising how little this set has potentially been used.

Top Edges: Both exceptionally neat: the back is thick and wide and has barely any rubbing. The front being single thickness has thickened little with any burring small and mild.

Bottom Edges: A little mild thickening to the front towards the right right corner, but few will ever avoid this as a bare minimum. Any rub traces to the back, thicker edge are very small, light and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type (the spine): A sealed edge where most records are stored, these are entered from the centre of the centrefold. This edge has the text which is naturally folded to be seen more inside, which is good news in it’s own way, as pretty much all has survived in super condition with barely any rubbing (as seen on my two close-up pictures). The actual surface of this edge has minor rubbing and some mainly gentle grubbiness, most near the top. A little gentle patchy rubbing to the actual folds but way less than seen on so many.

Left Edge: The traditional spine edge, this has no text printed and has minimal traces of wear. A spine that is more often seen crushed and bashed, often threadbare and even torn. This one being very solid, straight and barely any rubbing to surface or folds. Minor traces to the very ends and no splits to the entrance (or repairs).

Corners: Overall these are in fine condition and these are so prone to wear and often major damage. The odd small tip crease and mainly light tip rubbing but little more. Again, I have seen some of these totally eroded and rounded, feathered and ‘broken’. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that is likely to prove difficult to find much better. A very wear prone cover to say the least and this is still one of the better ones I have seen for some time. Any ‘box-like’ cover is more prone to wear and damage that most other types especially with central storage and thin fronts. This strong item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists - but finding this ‘perfect’ is a near impossible task these days.

The Illustrated Cards: EXCELLENT(++): all still joined with just the odd tiny edge nick to the folds. Untorn, clean, fresh with barely any hint of creasing. The white backs are clean as well with just the odd tiny tone spot hint. Again these are seldom found like this and in most cases missing altogether or incomplete. Now becoming scarce and very sort after.

The Inners: Both MINT(-): and little short of as made, unlined card inners with no splits, clean and attractive and no creasing or ringmarks from the records. Both paper unlined inner sleeves are also included with a little creasing but all edges unsplit and two superb crisp window circles.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): both intense black, very shiny and quite heavily – and one heavily pressed. The first disc with an almost extraordinary weight for this title. Most average in the high 120 to low 130 gram ranges, some lower still. So anything into the 140 and beyond are scarce, and 150 grams+ almost unheard of. A pair little played with any surface marks few, very fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. The most important factor bar none for me is the sound, which is simply superb. Visually super records that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic set play even above their high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive and I swear more detail and dynamics were heard from this pair. Played loud this still has tremenous power and detail and is heard to best advantage. Unusually, barely any surface sounds at all and this is a SUPERB pressing, it has to be my best yet and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this high class album that is still considered a classic and one of the genuine all time greats by the vast majority. These records will prove beyond difficult to hear better and they are strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
