Label/Format: Decca – large unboxed original Decca logo with matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Condition: Clean, still fresh and attractive with less than moderate spindle marks, these being fairly fine and quite faint, mostly seen under angled light. In terms of this very popular record, these are far less than average. Many copies of this early-made album are seen played to destruction, often written-off and unlistenable. The mono copies especially so. This is a very fine all-round example, a few blemishes but still an enjoyable copy. All details on cover and record further down.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A good solid weight for this popular record.

Rarity: Scarcer as a pre-69 pressing especially in anything like decent conditions. Like most Beatles albums, Rolling Stones records sold in vast quantities as well. The actual album is quite common, but the vast majority of copies will be much later pressings (usually in stereo) - this title was repressed many times, most seen are boxed. This mono record is very early and has npeep hole mono/stereo indicator on the back cover, those came in 1969. Also book attached to the gatefold cover. Later ones were detached being an insert rather than fixed booklet.

Original Year of Release: 1966.

Matrix Nos: XARL 7503-2A and XARL 7504-4A. The stampers are 1 CM / 2 B 1 U.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Not just a compilation album, far from it. These early classic singles are all in beautiful mono and they never sounded better than in this dynamic and detailed mode, many appearing for the very first time at 33.3 rpm - few appeared on the earlier UK studio albums. Also one of the most beautifully packaged Decca albums, this early mono example has the booklet strongly stapled into the centre - later copies were separate booklets. This very early copy does NOT have the small peep-hole mono/stereo indicator on the back of the sleeve, they came later in 1969 and this includes its early lined inner, the blue text on white type NOT the red mono bag that again came later. Another important note for this album is the UK copy varied considerably from the US version with a different cover and track listing - the UK version being the better of two in my opinion anyway. Another curiosity is the latest CD reissues did NOT include a UK version of this album, a bizarre choice of omission, why were not both released? This is a lovely all-round early-made copy with any blemishes to cover or record small and light. The record has largely escaped any ‘needle’ traumas bar one fine mark on side two that has around half-a-dozen mostly light ticks – not bad really for such a popular mono record. Early mono copies rarely gets seen looking (and sounding) this good – a high percentage of heavily played, badly scratched or even trashed totally. Visually attractive and playing very well indeed, the mono mode being the prime choice for the correct sound of the time. The fragile cover also with little to fault with a secure neat inside book, just a stain the top left back corner, maybe even from the inside adhesive that holds the sleeve together which we have all seen at some time. Not for the perfectionist, but many collectors will enjoy this classic early singles compilation – all potentially better than old scratchy singles and heard in a far more user-friendly way.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with stapled booklet in the centrefold. Laminated with Clarifoil front and back and NO peep-hole on the rear - this is the rarer very early version that never included this mono/stereo indicator, this is the correct dedicated TXL 101 Mono cover. Printed in England by Robert Stace and includes the vintage Decca polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The main issue for the highly discerning, is a toning stain on the spine top of the back – possibly natural – possibly not. But neither side has a great deal else to fault. A fairly small mild and shallow lift on the front spine edge and a tiny few very fine surface edge creases. Any marks or ageing minimal, the laminate retains a fine fresh sheen with hardly any dulling. The classic fisheye front cover graphic looks superb, and the back the same.

Cover Inner Gatefold/Booklet: The inside front and inside back covers are superb with little to fault. Then we have a six-page booklet, here original as stapled and fixed to the gatefold – later ones were a separate and detached piece. The two original staples as solid as when made, totally unloosened and untarnished. All pages have no tears or hard creases, minor crinkle traces and light handling evidence – yes these pictures were made to look at and doing so meant holding. But as can be seen on my pictures, these are still clean and attractive, and importantly with no damage and very solidly intact.

Top and Bottom Edges: Very prone to burring and feathering but these two delicate pair of edges have largely avoided any significant amounts. Viewed end-on, a little thicking and burring is present, but far less than many I have seen. A cover with these edges often proud and not flush, thus rarely escaping often major wear. Also the very edges being only single thickness and having less chance remaining crisp. So a little wear but overall still quite neat.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The thin card front is clean and sharp with barely any wear. The back opening is largely the same, crisp with minimal thickenig or burring. All edges are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

The Spine: Very solid and straight with all text unworn under solid and unpeeled laminate. A little gentle toning, mostly near the top corner, tiny end rubs being critical. Also this one is superbly folded being very square and neat, this makes a big difference for this fragile cover.

Corners: Light and small tip rubs, the odd tiny tip-in likely (bottom right). Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine near excellent example of this very fragile 1960’s cover. This a true first mono one and it will not prove too easy to find much better. Not for the perfectionist, but many collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: just a corner crease stops an extra (+) as it has aged little and not a great deal to fault. Two crisp undamaged window circles and very clear polylining, no edge splits or repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with a mark on side two that has around half-a-dozen mainly light ticks and little else. Any other visual blemishes are very fine and faint as seen under bright angled light, all evidence suggests this copy has been played sparingly, and way less than average for this popular album. All the early hit singles that sound impressive in the correct mono mix, and for me, far better than stereo. The sound and detail impressive, but these vintage classics were never quite as well recorded compared to The Beatles via the genius of George Martin. With a more raw and lo-fi sound, these wonderful songs work brilliantly and personally, I would not them any other way. They just sound so right for their era. The sound remains clean and enjoyable with very little to fault, how many of these will survive without the odd minor blemish? – let’s be honest. Even when played on my very revealing LP12 stereo turntable, these mono gems still sounded impressive. Again, this will please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A gateway back to the 1960, this plays up to and most all above its solid visual grading with very little to fault bar the very brief few ticks already mentioned on side two. Strong, dynamic mono sound with the correct mix for the era. Rolling Stones songs in quality mono are a joy to behold and for me are way better than the stereo versions. This was the mono age and these songs recorded as such. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with few blemishes overall. Every song a classic, this will again please many collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
