THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF RESIDENTS RECORDS - The 1972 debut of The Residents, the double-45 of SANTA DOG (Fire, Explosion, Lightning and Aircraft Damage).  Only 400 copies of this set were made in 1972, and most copies were mailed out for free as a Christmas card by Residents, Uninc. that year.  Needless to say, these records are HIGHLY sought after by rare vinyl collectors as well as The Residents' own rabid fans.  My reserve for this item is HALF of what another recent copy has sold for (and that one had no sleeve at all)! 

Both of these 45s are getting a VG+++/Ex- rating from me.  In most light, the records are nearly flawless.  In a direct and heavy light, you can see some very light wear on the 45s.  However, having played these records today to check them for quality, there are NO skips, NO pops, and NO surface noise at all!!!  This is highly unusual, particularly since this record was pressed onto polystyrene.  These records play unusually clean.  Rare, especially considering that these records are now 36 years old!  NO writing or rips on the labels, it's very clear that this record wasn't played a lot, ha!

About the cover, for the uninitiated: The original sleeves for Santa Dog were silkscreened and cut to size, and then lacquered for a shiny finish and to try to preserve the silkscreened inks.  The records were then put in the sleeves, and the covers were closed (folded in the middle) and shrinkwrapped.  The problem was, MOST copies were not completely dry when they were sealed shut, so the facing layers of lacquered sleeve got stuck to each other - People trying to reveal the beautiful gatefold sleeve then effectively destroyed the cover by opening it.  The end effect of this was, MOST copies of this sleeve are at least partially if not totally destroyed (let alone the undoubtedly high percentage of folks who likely threw the whole thing out altogether - There's some VERY unorthodox music on these records, to say the least)!  At the end of the day, there's only a handful of sleeves in existence, and VERY few that are in good shape (having fully dried before being closed and lacquered).  THAT, my friends, is part of what makes this release so legendary.  That, and also being the kickoff point for the still-prolific career of the world's most mysterious and anonymous band.  This band has gone on to create over 40 albums, dozens of singles, etc. through the last 26 years, but THIS SET OF 45s was the genesis for the many years of beauty and chaos.  (For more information, please visit www.Residents.com)

This GENUINE set of 45s does not have the original cover, but I am including an exact-size PERFECT full-color replication of the sleeve, see pics (the colors on the print are darker and stronger than they appear in these photos)!  And the specimen of the sleeve used is 99.9% perfect, with NO rips at all!!!  Excuse the glare from the photographic flash in the image shown, rest assured, these prints are faithful to the real McCoy.  The winner can easily use these prints to make their own sleeve, or hang them up, either way.  These prints are absolutely beautiful, and are a PERFECT replication of the original silkscreened sleeve.
