Mehta & The LA Phil -
THE PLANETS -
London ffrr CS-6734 Promo -
UK Pressing -
TAS "Best of the Bunch" -
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY STUNNING!

I had just spent hours in my hi-fi store setting up a mirror-imaged, stacked pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 loudspeakers.  The heavy subs were off the floor and away from the walls, to breathe, and I was about to take a breather myself, when in comes my business partner…yep, slicing open a new copy of something.

"You gotta hear this," he says.  So I plunk down, in the sweet spot, and "Mars" begins.

"Hold it, wait, wait, wait…" I get up, scurry a bit, shift the sub-woofers more toward the wall, straighten the DQ-10s a touch, no toe-in at all.  I run back and sit.  "Ok, let 'er rip."

Yep, that's what I said.  But from that very moment until she hit the dead wax at the end, there was nothing at all in this world but the swirl of planets, and, of course, Zubin Mehta and company delivering breathtaking sound.

Fact is, I couldn't move.  The attack was unGodly, the space so well defined, the panoramic sweep with such depth, it was hard to do anything but close your eyes and willingly step into the acoustic.

That said, note, too, this highly praised recording, released by London in 1971, is one of only 12 highly-touted "Best of the Bunch" recordings honored on the TAS list.

I warn you: It will tell you more about your hi-fi system than you perhaps want to know.

Jacket is fine, with a touch of ring, a small note on back, and a punch hole.  Record inside is a rare promo – the preferred UK pressing – in near-mint playing condition.

A well-tended audiophile’s copy.

For other fine records, TAS picks and hard-to-finds, please see my complete list of offerings here on eBay.

Shipping and handling is $5 for up to 5 LPs shipped within the States. Internationally, $15 via airmail for the first LP, $4 each thereafter. (Canada is half that.) Boxes over 4 lbs., add another $6, because First Class is no longer available at that weight, just Priority Mail. Note, too, boxed sets of LPs require more postage.
