Label/Format: Translantic – original purple and white format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and attractive with only light and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. These marks are all very fine indeed and are only seen with close scrutiny.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 135 / 137 grams. Good solid weights for their era.

Rarity: Scarce: and try finding these two records in cleaner conditions or better pressed. Both offer sublime sound that takes you directly to the concert and recording studio alike.

Brief Info: Carrying on the distinctly folk-flavoured theme for these Sunday’s listings I offer this stunning gem of an album. This was The Pentangle’s second album and a double set of the highest possible quality. The first disc is a beautifully recorded live album and the second a studio work. Every song and instrumental are performed superbly by one of the most gifted folk acts of the era. Jacqui McShee has one of the most pure voices within the folk genre and here sounds as magnificent as ever. I often state on my listings that Translantic records were sometimes a little variable in pressing quality, but here they do this sublime album full justice. Four sides of pristine sound and totally blemish-free, a bold statement I realise for a predominately acoustic act, but truly, I did not hear a single crackle, pop or click or pressing blemish on any second of this set. This is pure reference quality and jazz-tinged folk music of the highest calibre. The only noteworthy blemish on the entire set is a small surface tear to the inside of the cover. That apart, that too is in superb condition and overall, for looks and especially sound, this brilliant album will not be beaten. Worthy of note is the cover’s designer, Peter Blake famed for his design of The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’ cover. Even the most discerning audiophile listener can apply for this beauty.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+) and only marked down a fraction because of the small surface tear inside (this near the bottom left corner area). A gatefold format with the front and back laminated. All closed edges are protected and the laminate ends inside the folds. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Lamination – Front & Back: A beautiful cover as you would expect from it’s designer Peter Blake. Both sides are gorgeous, the front especially so. Both sides has fresh, shiny and very clear laminate with minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling. All is fully adhered with no lifts or blisters and any creasing tiny, few and faint. The front has a couple of press marks but these only really show with angled viewing. The richness of the artwork colour is fantastic and the more white back has no yellowing or toning. Minimal traces of any record rim impression with only mild dulling seen under light. Both sides have defyed their age and look very impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Just the small surface pull as mentioned already, that apart, little else to fault and the pale inside has little discolour, grubbiness or marks. If the small surface tear is an issue however, do not bid.

Top Edges: Barely any traces of wear and still very smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same again. All are very straight and this lies perfectly flat when closed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to very sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these outside edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, both right edges meet up quite closely together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate but does appear a little ‘sunken’ by the naturally forming central recess by opening. More unusually, all the laminate is intact with no peeling at all.

Corners: All very neat and crisp with minimal traces of any tip rubbing or creasing.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this gorgeous early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This is so often ruined by creasing, laminate issues and dulling, I have seldom, if ever seen a better example. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: MINT(-): these are mirror-image original unlined solid white inners. Any discolour or seam glue darkening is minimal and all edges secure with no repairs. Barely any creasing of note at all and all simply emphasises how carefully looked after and little played these records are.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual pair that are super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces tiny, few and very faint. Visually super records that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with nothing to fault whatsoever. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Just like the debut and subsequent albums, this is beautifully recorded and offers genuine high fidelity sound with stunning detail. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Absolutely gorgeous songs that offer reference quality audio reproduction, I will boldly state, this pair could not be beaten for pristine blemish-free sound – this too when being played on a reference standard very revealing Linn LP12 turntable – still for many listeners, the best turntable of all time. A hugely difficult task for over 40-year-old vinyl and such delicate material. McShee’s stunning vocals are crystal clear, precise and fully focused with an in-the-room quality, a true delight for even the most discerning audiophile listener. I did not hear a single trace of crackle or pressing noise at all. If only all Transatlantic pressings were this good, this pair are joy from start to finish, and any winning fan of this legendary folk act is in for a real treat when playing this set. Few copies will even match, let outperform this pair I am certain. Both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these outstandingly clean records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional VPI-17 vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
