Their name is synonymous with the rich R&B legacy of their native New Orleans. Brothers Aaron, Art, Charles and Cyril - The Neville Brothers - ARE the first family of New Orleans funk.

And in support of their latest album 'Walkin' In The Shadow Of Life' - their first since 1999 and acclaimed as their best since 1989's 'Yellow Moon' - the nine-piece Neville Brothers will tour Australia in April.

The band have always been hugely popular in Australia, their fiery fusion of funky R&B, killer grooves and political/social anthems holding fans through a 25 year career.

But it was eldest brother and band leader Art Neville's brush with death and paralysis after back surgery in late 2001 that triggered a reunion of the brothers. Art's comment to his siblings, 'I feel like I've been walking in the shadow of life', ended the band's five-year hiatus from recording and led to this spirited new album.

Blending old school and new school, 'Walkin' In The Shadow Of Life' (set for release next month on EMI) brims with their trademark grooves and pointed commentary on war, crime, poverty and other social ills. The album has garnered great reviews everywhere, reigniting the band's passion for live touring - the cornerstone of their career.

These days the Neville Bros are also a family affair, with the brothers bringing in five of their sons to the album. Aaron's son, Ivan (known as part of Rolling Stones Keith Richards' Xpensive Winos touring band and releasing his own solo album 'If My Ancestors Could See Me Now' in 1988) also co-produced 'Walkin' In The Shadow Of Life'. Ivan (keys) and Art's son Ian (guitar) are also part of the Neville Brothers band.

Arthur Charles Aaron and Cyril united under the Neville Bros name in 1977, but all members had been active musically for a decade previously. Best known was Aaron, whose heavenly vibrato was the trademark of his first pop smash in 1966 with the gorgeous 'Tell It Like It Is.'

The Neville's first album, the superb 'Fiyou On The Biyou' (1981 A&M), had renditions of 'Iko Iko' and 'Brother John'.

The band's popularity continued to rise through blistering live shows, but it wasn't until they teamed with master producer Daniel Lanois for 1989's 'Yellow Moon', that they became widely known. 'Yellow Moon' featuring the inspirational 'Sister Rosa' is thought by many as their finest hour.

1990's 'Brothers Keeper' spurred by Aaron's duet with Linda Ronstadt on 'Don't Know Much' was another huge seller.

Special guest support act for all shows is The Flood. Led by the incredible vocal talents of Kevin Bennett, the Flood are renowned as one of Australia's finest roots/country/blues bands and acclaimed by Rhythms magazine as "Australia's most under-rated band". They are sure to kick off the night in fine style.
