THE MONKEES – Head ORIG RCA LP / SF 8051 (UK, Stereo, 1969)

It always amazes me when classic 1960s albums show up in this kind of condition. If you’ve been after a near perfect copy of The Monkees surreal soundtrack opus, then this is it. Maybe a Sixties teen picked this up expecting more of the classic bubblegum formula, only to be bamboozled by the spoken word, multi-speed satire and classic psychedelia contained within these grooves (showing the growing influence of Zappa on the Monkees circle). Then it was put away in the cupboard by the looks of it. This is a lovely, near untouched copy with super audio and a great sleeve too.
The front laminated single sleeve was manufactured in the UK by Robert Stace and has survived very well indeed. These are the (minor) imperfections away from a true Mint grade: a thin strip of laminate lift along the front spine edge (not broken); one light crease to the front top left and one small thumb crease to the centre; very light ring marking (only visible if angled); slight rubbing to the rear back black panel (miles away from the usual wear this face picks up)and a thin pen line to the front (see photo). Other than these inconspicuous signs of age there’s not much to complain about. Great pinched spine (not flattened or scuffed), no tears or splits, no real edge wear, not much softening of the opening edges, great fresh laminate, all four corners still sharp and not bumped. All told for a sleeve going on 43 years old, it’s superb. Grades a true EX (Excellent).
The bright orange smooth labels are as you’d want them – without writing, stickers, dirt or residue. Lovely bright colour with the merest smattering of faint spindle evidence. Fine pair of these vintage ’69 labels!
The medium weight vinyl is a real beauty. Some people’s idea of Mint minus is a disc lightly marked with slight loss of shine – RUBBISH! Here we have a record with FULL shine NO marks of any kind and brilliant unhindered audio. So that’s NO scuffs, hairlines or scratches, playing with NO snap, crackle, pops, ticks, clicks, hiss, distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition. Visually looks a true M- (Mint Minus) and plays the same. Just exemplary!
This is a great example of a thoroughly entertaining period piece. If you want a totally quiet ‘As We Go Along’ or a high def ‘Circle Sky’ then you got it.

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
