Most people consider Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. the best Monkees album, while there are Headquarters fans as well. Head is sometimes seen as a more esoteric masterpiece. And of course The Monkees and More of the Monkees appeal to those who have nothing against pure, youthful pop/rock fun. The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees is considered 'a well-crafted, mature album that includes "Valleri" and "Daydream Believer." Y'know, there was a disintegration going on.' This is a shame, while the contents of the album are often superb: not only 'The Monkees at their best', but popular music in such heights we don't associate The Monkees with.

The opening track "Dream World" is such a dream-like and beautiful pop song that I immediately need another listen to make sure it is really what it is. A smash start. "Auntie's Municipal Court" is not that awesome at all, but still it is Mike Nesmith (despite Micky Dolenz on vocals) doing what he can – a kind of progressed "You Just May Be the One", heading from standard folk rock to early country rock via psychedelia station. "We Were Made for Each Other" is like "Dream World" but less impressive – this is when one gets to think the album consists of tracks by Davy Jones Orchestra and Mike Nesmith Band by turns. In later listens "We Were Made for Each Other" appears to be a great pop song in its own right, and interestingly reminiscent of Bee Gees.

"Tapioca Tundra" is the psychedelic Monkees from the first second. After all it turns out to be less psychedelic than groovy. A great track. Then comes the "Daydream Believer" we all know, and it sounds just as wonderful now as before. "Writing Wrongs" is one of the most fascinating numbers on the whole album (that is much said!): a slow, heavy pop song turns into an avantgardist, experimental, almost disharmonic mess of beats and sounds that seems to be enormously ahead of its time. I guess something like this could have emerged from the '70s Berlin scene with Bowie (Davy Jones, that is, heh!) and Brian Eno. "I'll Be Back Up on My Feet" is a terrific follow-up song, and this is the point when someone like me understands: The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees is a wonderful album! No wonder why "Dream World" and "I'll Be Back Up on My Feet" opened the sides on the original vinyl LP. "The Poster" sounds relatively ordinary after the preceding four, but in fact it is also fine.

"P.O. Box 9847" is the first Boyce & Hart song on the album – and the first one that doesn't work. This doesn't mean it isn't any experimental or psychedelic; it is, but that doesn't make it any better. "Magnolia Simms" is Mike Nesmith being extra whimsical (again, that is much said): the noises of an old record, the needle getting artificially stuck, a country jazz sort of song. Damn, The Beatles may have started this with "When I'm Sixty-Four", but The Monkees took it to the extreme. "Valleri" is familiar of course, and though it is good, in this company it feels like a... yes... filler! Finally "Zor and Zam" closes the set; it certainly isn't one of the best tracks but still opens a new ground for the Monkee music, once again.

Wow, I'm amazed. The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees appears to be my favourite Monkees album. A masterpiece by Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith and, to a slightly lesser extent, Micky Dolenz – but where is Peter Tork?

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.

(b)         The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

(PLEASE NOTE: THE SHRINK WRAP HAS SEPARATED ALONG ABOUT 10% OF THE OPENING SIDE, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY SEALED)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.(nothing significant) 110-BE

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)
