THE LOVE MACHINE – Electronic Music To Blow Your Mind By. Wah Wah Records LPS 125. Spanish release. FACTORY SEALED VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1968 on the Design budget label. This edition issued in 2013. Comes in an old-style jacket with the flaps on the outside, like those late 60s UK jackets. Psychsploitation recording. TRACKS:  Mindblower, Zenquake, Clockburst, Bells For Eternal Zoom, Inner Ear Freakout, The Shadows Of Vibrate, Prism On Prism, Lunar Sea, Asbury Tripper, and Comin’ Down. DESCRIPTION:  This album initially appeared on the Design label in early 1968 and like many of these budget label cash-in exploitation albums, this was recorded by a group of uncredited musicians. The Design label, a division of Pickwick Records, may be familiar to some of you Velvet Underground/Lou Reed collectors as the issuer of the various artists album Out Of Sight (SDLP-269) that included the group the Beachnuts, a studio band featuring a young Lou Reed who had been employed as a composer/studio musician for Pickwick. Containing all instrumentals, the Love Machine’s Electronic Music To Blow Your Mind By!!! offers not a lick of information about the artists behind the mayhem and psychosis. These companies were run like factories kicking out albums featuring the popular now sounds (some with rearrangements of hit songs, others containing music created on the spot in the current style of what was high on the charts). As opposed to the burgeoning record stores that carried the major labels featuring the original artists, these were primarily carried in super-markets, department stores, convenience marts, etc., that usually weren’t known for having a record department. These albums usually sat in a self contained wire rack placed in a high traffic area of the store for maximized impulse shopping exposure. The independent distributor of these recordings was thus called a “rack jobber”, which meant the store didn’t have to do anything but sell the product; once a month or so this guy came by, took a piece count of the inventory, presented a bill for the sold items, and filled the rack back up. So numerous companies sprung up to fill the need for this cheap music; and some of it turned out as good or better than their major label cousins. Producers would enlist a group of studio musicians, slap a name on them, and put together records peddling whatever sonic fashion was hot at the moment. We’re only in it for the money, to quote Frank Zappa … As their neon-lit candles imply, the Love Machine hitched themselves to the psychedelic bandwagon, and did so with goofy grins and gleams in their glassy eyes. Streaked to the bone with weirdo sound effects, resembling a mishmash of gunshots, slamming doors, high winds, jet planes in flight, and rushing waters, Electronic Music To Blow Your Mind By!!! dials in on cutting edge frequencies by the pound; one can catch some early electronic doodlings in the background here and there. Bearing brain-altering titles like Zenquake, Inner Ear Freakout, Bells For Eternal Zoom, and The Shadows Of Vibrate, the album twists, turns, tumbles, and topples with warped and wiggy jams. Visualize the Ventures, the Deep, and Pink Floyd exchanging ideas and riffs, and that pretty much sums up the mood and direction of the album. Musically this is a great spin and worthy of your further investigation. SIDE BAR:  Some of these budget labels also offered strictly classical music, licensing European symphony orchestra performances cheaply and giving them their first US issue. This quick cash cow was tapped into by some established independent labels that offered budget lines of these classical recordings such as the Solomon brothers’ Vanguard Records (Vanguard actually began as a classical label) and Jac Holzman’s Elektra Records who created the Nonesuch label for its classical budget releases (how do you think Jack got the money to open up that flashy New York City headquarters at 5 Columbus Place and open up an LA office and sign Love And The Doors; it wasn’t from the money he made off the Judy Collins catalog).

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

RETURN POLICY:

Any item that must be returned is done so at the buyer’s expense. Any refund, exchange, or substitution/credit will be at the buyers choice, but not made until the original item is received back by me; in the condition as stated in the item description.  

NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:

It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal systems it is beyond my control. With first class mail international my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery (especially to Italy), though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
