Description
THE LONELY ONES - NOEL REDDING, LEAD GUITAR - (HENDRIX BASS PLAYER) 1963 HAYTON MANOR FOUR TRACK 45 RPM EP
Sleeve Condition: Replacement sleeve
Record Condition: Vg+: The vinyl looks pretty good with light marking and the record has clearly been played very little. However, there is noticeable surface noise. This can only be the poor quality vinyl on which the record is pressed. It is after all, a private pressing from an unknown studio and pressing plant from 1963. Having said all that, the music is unaffected by tracking issues, clicks or pops or defects caused by excessive wear or groove damage. All four tracks play fine throughout without a problem. There is a sound clip example from the first track later in this listing.
The Lonely Ones were made up of Derek Knight on vocals, Trevor Sutton on drums, Noel Redding (of later Jimi Hendrix Experience fame) on lead guitar and John Andrews on bass. This was a privately pressed EP at the Hayton Manor Studio in Stanford, Kent, in 1963. It?s impossible to know how many were pressed at the time but it was certainly less than 99 as that was the limit of copies possible before tax needed to be paid. This was definitely the case here as this copy has a tax exempt, ?Private Record? sticker to Side One.
To say that it is rare is a gross under-exaggeration. To my knowledge, and I?ve been dealing in records for more than 25 years, there has never been one offered for sale before. There is no mention of the band in Tapestry of Delights, nor is there any record of one appearing for sale on eBay from the website, Popsike. There are a few scattered mentions of The Lonely Ones and the odd reference to a privately pressed, Hayton Manor EP here and there on the internet. They all refer to Noel Redding?s presence in the band as lead guitarist but aside from a brief biography of the band morphing into ?The Burnettes? later, there is very little written.
Hayton Manor, (where the EP was recorded) is in Stanford, Kent, the county where Noel Redding lived until joining Jimi Hendrix (who actually played in a tiny, private club in Folkestone to try out Noel when he arrived here only three years later) This was all prior to any official UK, Hendrix gigs.
The track on the E.P. most notable for Noel?s guitar work is ?Talking About You?. He lets rip about halfway through the song with an original, double plectrum technique which belies his youth and would have confounded most 1963, Shadows ? type or rock ?n? roll lead guitarists of the time. His rhythm work on that track and ?Some Other Guy? is driving and urgent and displays a sense of timing which bearing in mind he was only 17 at the time is pretty stunning. Though the tracks are covers, their treatment and arrangements are anything but copies. They sound fresh, even today, and the band sounds just that, a band.
The record will obviously appeal to fans and collectors of Noel Redding. It will also clearly be of interest to Hendrix fans, collecting the scant pre-Hendrix history on vinyl. But it should also attract keen interest from early 1960?s guitar band, beat, freakbeat and early psyche collectors. It really is a very, very rare item. I am expecting a lot of interest in the record so I have prepared short sound clip. Just click on the link below the track listing here.
