Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, Leslie West's third studio album, simply entitled The Leslie West Band, includes cool rhythm guitar work laid down by Mick Jones. Jones also contributed considerably during the writing and arranging process.
Coming off the 1975, heavy-on-covers The Great Fatsby LP, West hit '76 with the ten song effort that features eight original cuts. With Corky Laing behind the drum kit and a host of guest musicians assisting, Leslie and company got down to blues-rockin' business. The time-honored West guitar tone runs deep throughout the LP, which leads off with the get-down groovin' strut of "Money (Whatcha Gonna Do)". The big coin inspired opener gives way to a less-is-more reworking of "Dear Prudence".
Countering the passive "Dear Prudence", West and company let loose via the jammin' "Get It Up", then slide into the free 'n' easy, one-minute-plus "Singapore Sling". "By The River" cooks, which leans into "The Twister". The tight recording, produced by Bud Prager, peaks mid-set with "The Twister". The short, ridin' high cut packs bitchin' blooze muscle and hot horns, while big Leslie augments "The Twister" with his commanding vocals.
The diverse album continues with "The Setting Sun", a shining ray of laidback country rock, backed with soulful vocals. "Sea of Heartache" is an inspired instrumental that brings Robin Trower to mind, and the album rolls to a close with an eleven-minute remake of "We Gotta Get Out of This Place".
