Description

     This is a gem.  If you're into vinyl and have a good enough ear to appreciate the difference, then you will love this.  In 1976, The Band got together at the Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving for a farewell concert to end all farewell concerts.  Since they had a lot of friends, they invited them to come and play, and Martin Scorsese tagged along to film the whole thing and turn it into a documentary history of the band.  Who played?  Well, let's see: there was Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Dr John, Neil Diamond, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Joe "pine top" Perkins, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, The Staples, and the members of The Band: Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson.  There are three discs with thirty different tracks.  There is a lot of stuff on here that exists nowhere else, the movie couldn't accomodate all of the performances.  Along with a twelve page book of color photos taken at the performance (Annie Leibovitz helped with that chore, among others) the three discs are packed in better-than normal sleeves and all stuffed into a nice heavy jacket.  Stuffed is the operative word, and, once the glue dried out the top and bottom seams on the jacket fell apart.  But the jacket is still in very good shape, aside from the glue.  I really don't know why they didn't allow a little more paper, then it wouldn't have fallen apart.  These discs are all in excellent shape, I would guess that I didn't play them much, if at all.  I had a lot of vinyl, and a very high-end turntable, so it's hard to tell.  I looked around, and this is very hard if not impossible to find on vinyl at this price.
