Label Conditions: Both still fresh, clean and attractive with spindle marks moderate. Have no fears however, this lovely record plays beautifully with hardly anything unwanted. The audio quality still sharp, focused with minimal traces of anything – bar quality.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare: and personally, I consider the stereo version rarer than the mono. This still issued in the ‘mono era’ and still the choice of the majority. With many a classic from this year overlooked by ‘Peppermania’, this was somewhat overshadowed. Not seen or had many stereo originals before and this record does it superb justice with lovely clean audio quality.

Brief Info: One of the UK’s greatest music treasures, this album is up there with the very best albums of all-time. Brilliant pop music and their sound had now progressed beyond pure RnB. Ray Davies writes most of the thirteen songs on offer with his brother Dave writing two – the classic ‘Death of a Clown’ was co-written by them both. Ray especially in the 60s, wrote some of the most brilliant songs of this famous decade. Catchy tunes with superb lyrics, but their albums did not sell in the numbers they should have done. Although the singles still did well, the albums declined which is mystifying as they simply got better and better and better. This is a rare record especially in stereo and now commands a realistic high catalogue price, it’s very difficult to find lightly played. Tired, dull looking vinyl with significant marks, scratches and bad sound is almost the norm for such pieces. This one has been played a few times, but I would strongly suggest, mostly with due care. A few light surface marks, but no degrading on sound – Pye records were amongst the most durable and tough. With ‘Peppermania’ sweeping the country, masterpieces of this type were largely overlooked, in my humble opinion, I consider this album in no way inferior to the far more famous title. In terms of rarity, well Pepper would have sold several thousand to just one of these. Hardly any wonder it’s all but disappeared. It did briefly peak at 35 in the UK albums charts, a lowly effort for such a beautiful album and faired even worse in the States with a miserable high of 153. Maybe the change of direction from beat to art-pop was not what their early fans wanted. Only as the years passed have these classic Kinks albums been so cherished and highly sort-after, few survive in top conditions with many trashed or even written-off. Viewing and hearing this early stereo issue is a privilege not to be taken lightly. A record that plays with NO distortion, pressing noises or surface sound worthy of mention, the music all focused and sharp with no clipping to the high frequencies. Just four clicks heard as the very end of ‘Lazy Old Sun’, two of which on the joining groove. Remember, one jolt or needle drop from a Dansette or similar old record player that tracked at massive weights could have destroyed this or any similar record. This has just the one very small penetrating mark to cause the brief blemish, but no others of noteworthiness. Pop nostalgia never gets better than The Kinks and this is one of their very best ever – the timeless ‘Waterloo Sunset’ brings this perfect album to the perfect end - and maybe even a tear to the eye?

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): and no shame in that for an immensely wear-prone and difficult cover. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces, this being more unusual for the time and most of the Kinks 1960s albums were laminated. It has three large rear external flipbacks which were always prone to damage and wear – here not escaping entirely. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and has the ‘Patents pending’ text. This is a dedicated mono sleeve with the NPL 18193 number on back and spine which was also used on the stereo version. These in most cases had a ‘Stereo’ sticker on the back, this has one, but over time dried out and fell off leaving only a dull trace on the NPL prefix, but no tear or damage to the area. The original plain tracing paper lined inner is also included.

Cover Front: For those who know this cover well, most will it does not age or tolerate bad storage or heavy handling well. The silver-grey surface rubs very easily and will rarely be found devoid of some wear. Even with some fairly gentle surface rubbing, I still consider this a very fine example. Some more general rubbing on the edges that here and there just about show from the front view, but not many. Few marks, no sticker tears and creases, one near the left edge from spine compression. The artwork clean and looking very impressive as seen in close-up. Given it’s fragility and unforgiving nature, this is still a very fine front.

Cover Back: The back is even more perilous, with three large flipbacks that so often get badly damaged. The bottom one had a vertical tear that have repaired as neatly as I could, it now appears as a crease. A smallish rub on the bottom left corner tip, but this apart, the rest is magnificent with little other wear or issues. In fact the main back panel is up there with the very best I have seen with minimal friction rubs or ringwear. The stereo sticker long since gone and only under light is there any light evidence it was ever there with a gentle residue dull. There were no dedicated stereo covers for this album when first made, reitterating Pye’s decision most sales would be in mono. The othere two flipbacks are in superb condition with no issues or any note. Due to spine edge compression, the text – which is fully present and unrubbed – is seen on the back as again seen in close-up. The bonus being it is actually all there at all, many are seen threadbare with none or little left at all.

Top Edge: Smallish rubs at each end, but the rest unworn and still straight and neat.

Bottom Edge: Moderate and a little patchy rubbing on this clearly vulnerable storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp given the age and thick record inside. A little thickening seen viewed end-on, but few will avoid this as a bare minimum. Record enters on this edge that (like indeed every element and aspect of this cover) has no enhancements or trimming.

Spine and Text: Solid and still straight with some compression as mentioned already. A fairly small rub near the bottom corner, little else really with the odd small trace of chip. All the text is simply perfect and totally unworn, strong and bold, but now seen more via front viewing. Any cover with full spine text retention is to be commended as many are seen badly eroded and worn.

Corners: Moderate corner rubs but fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: Do not underestimate how wear-prone this cover is, it is rarely seen in top conditions and such is it’s scarcity, I have no qualms in offering one with what consider only modest wear or issues. The small flipback repair being the most of any note and now back fully intact, and still quite neat. So not for the perfectionist, but if ‘perfection’ only is demanded, this cover/album is unlikely ever to be offered. So a solid and still very fine looking example that many will appreciate.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this very early stereo copy includes the plain white tracing paper style lined inner sleeve. This has one corner crease and two very small edge splits which I neatly repaired to stop them potentially widening in the future. These hardly even show at all. Two neat crisp window circles (again one small tear repaired by me) and the lining immaculate. Mild age discolour, but with such a heavy record inside since 1967, this has survived in very fine condition overall.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to – and this does not do this vintage record full justice. A lovely record and heavily pressed record with clean, shiny surfaces. These vintage Pye pressings were usually of vast weight and were tough and resilient with deeper grooves. Hence any marks often have little or no consequences. This has very few anyway, just one tiny one emits four clicks as mentioned, two of which on the joining groove. A few very fine superficial surface marks few records of this vintage will avoid totally. Overall, although played several times, I would suggest mostly with due care and the sound remains superb. If indeed if this were not the case, I would not offer it, my play-grade proved a wonderful experience and I have very few stereo copies of this record. It will take an exceptional example to better this for looks or sound and stereo originals do not get seen in anything like the number of the monos. This 1967 masterpiece will prove difficult to find better and for looks (and sound), this deserves strong recommendation.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful Kinks classic plays even above it’s very impressive visual grading with little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, never, ever take this for granted on any older record whether mono or stereo. All frequencies are sharp, focused and clear with no crackle or clipping. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound that images very well. Any surface sounds minimal with just the brief few aforementioned clicks as ‘Lazy Old Sun’ fades away. I again remind I play all my records on very revealing equipment as listed further down, but the music simply excelled. A very clean pressing with no manufacture issues, deep grooves and all the detail and warmth only original vinyl truly has to offer. What a joy to hear this monumental classic so clean, this was a real pleasure from start to finish, the odd blemish never an issue for me, it simply adds to what is being heard – a true 1967 pressing and not a clinical digital alternative. Has any album ended with a better or more beautiful song than the sublime ‘Waterloo Sunset’? – even the more difficult innermost tracks play as cleanly as the early ones. Few examples these days will match or outperform this very early stereo pressing I feel sure - and early is the word for this - actually purchased within the year of issue, check out above those incredibly early first mothers and stamper codes. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this true classic. Neither cover or record are visually ‘perfect’, but how many survive that truly are? This should please many, if not most collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
