Label/Format: Pye – second format, a few were briefly issued on the previous black and blue format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only ultra light and light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Just a mere couple of traces on side one, and without any doubt, this super copy has been played little.

Cat Number: NSPL 18365.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. Even Pye records became lighter into the 1970s, this issued in the year of the oil crisis and shortage.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: this sold poorly and no copy of this is easy to find. One with little-worn covers even more so.

Brief Info: The final Kinks album on Pye before a move to RCA. This was a soundtrack album from the infamous British comedy film ‘Percy’ – I won’t go into detail… . It features new songs all written by Ray Davies, some instrumental. It predictably sold poorly and is scarce, but is a lovely album that few Kinks fans will not enjoy. This a lovely clean copy with a little-worn cover and hardly played record. These do not come along often and for those still to hear it, few will be disappointed, it has all the quirky Kinks pop charm and I love it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a very fragile single format unlaminated sleeve with both sides textured. These rarely wear well. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Very clean, fresh with vibrant unfaded artwork. Barely any creasing, rubbing or grubbiness, just a faint rim impression near the top edge. Few of these escape often heavy ring wear and this front is very impressive.

Cover Back: Largely the same again with a little more pronounced rim impression again near the top edge. No ink loss or erosion but a little darkened, so more apparent on the revealing yellow surface. Still few will have less and the lack of deep penetrating ring wear and creasing are huge bonuses.

Top Edge: Any rub traces tiny and faint, a small few equally tiny tone spots, but look hard. This edge, like all on this delicate cover, is thin, but remains straight and very neat.

Bottom Edge: Somewhat against the odds, this is practically as made with barely a hint of rubbing at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring tiny and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid but very thin, straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn, also very well centred on the narrow depth. A small crease near the top with a tiny rub, but little else to fault.

Corners: All in remarkably neat and crisp condition with any tip rubbing tiny.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This very impressive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner. A little creasing and crinkle but all edges unsplit. Both window circles neat, a couple of small tears I neatly repaired to stop them getting bigger, any evidence they were ever there now minimal. The lining ultra clear and barely crinkled, any discolouration to the white paper mild. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This final Pye Kinks record plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Even though a soundtrack and with some instrumentals, this is still classic era Kinks and fans will enjoy this for sure. A less-lauded album by this famous British band, it will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
