Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Only light+ / very light spindle marks with are light and quite faint, especially for very revealing labels that show marks freely. This is an impressive mono record that plays lovely clean sound with little unwanted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a very clean mono copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics. For sure, they are proving very hard to find at all now, mono copies especially more often seen in very poor conditions, this one plays beautifully with little unwanted. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow-up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills, but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. This one has an attractive cover, a little spine wear at the ends which few seem to avoid, but the main areas are impressive. The record appears modestly played and certainly not abused or ruined by old record players of the era. Lastly, the lyric insert is superb and with little to fault. So a really fine all-round example to please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): quite conservatively graded. A gatefold format with a laminated front and back. This ends inside the centre spread on four external flipbacks situated on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd. No text printed on this spine and this is a dual purpose mono and stereo cover. The Polydor inner is included and a very impressive original lyric insert ‘poster’ sheet.

Lamination – Front & Back: Those familiar will know this cover seldom escapes edge chipping and even surface splits, and most of the issues with this one are on the edges, but nothing really major. Both front and back are attractive, the laminate retains a decent shine, clarity and freshness. Under light, some mildish dulling is seen, but the overall lack of creasing and lifting are significant pluses. Some corners have chipped and marks are few and light, as are the very few creases that are present. Bright, almost spectacular artwork still very pleasing. So both sides giving modest hints of age, but this is a tough one to find and many collectors will be more than happy with this still attractive example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: In terms of wear, this centrefold has little to fault, a mere trace of waving being critical. All flipbacks are very solid and unlifted or damaged, all ends crisps and burr-free with no sticking. The man’s picture has an eerie presence and adds a real sense of awe to this classic cover – without doubt, one of the most charismatic centrespreads in rock history.

Top Edges: Both are flat, straight and flush. The front is near perfect, the back has central chipping/rubbing but no split, this trait all too common on this cover.

Bottom Edges: Similar again in reverse: the back near perfect, the front with small central wear as per above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed and has little wear but gentle curl to the ends, again that is common. The back opening edge has a little patchy thickening, the inner one sharper and very neat. All are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced making them far neater than average for a totally natural example.

Spine and Text: The spine is often the area that takes the most wear and damage, opening clearly puts pressure on the laminate which usually cracks resulting in often large chipping and loss of the surface artwork. Here both ends have at least moderate rubbing, but the main surface has fared considerably better. One smallish chip about three-quarters way down, then little else bar a natural fine central line ‘crack’. This quite honest is rarely avoided, this neater and lighter than most I would suggest. As seen, most of the surface is intact, bar the ends and still quite solid and straight. No compression and folded square, so the edges are flush and parallel which always makes any cover look neater and attractive.

Corners: All four right corner tips have quite small tip rubs and retain fine to very fine shape with no knocks. The spine corners have rubbed and chipped, this is seen mostly viewing the spine end-on, here at least moderate or more. A hint of rounding, but very decent shape retained overall.

Cover Summary: Overall, a very fine example, but not for purists who want close to ‘as-new’ whatever the cost. Such examples are rare and seldom get seen or offered. I consider this one above average and still attractive and intact. It will please many collectors wanting this evergreen classic.

The Insert ‘Poster’: EXCELLENT(+): firstly, this is the genuine article, photocopies will be around and offered as the real thing - Beware!, but this item will never be easy to fake and fool anyone. Deep magenta text on a very deep orange background, but printing quality can vary with the text sometimes looking fuzzy. This one has text very clear, sharp and focused making the lyrics easier to read. It is a notorious fragile item that fades, tears and creases badly if not looked after properly. This example is unmounted, e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks and has no hard creases, just minor crinkle that few can hope to avoid totally. Made with thin paper with a matt surface and one manufactured fold which is strong and unweakened. All edges crisp and the surface very clean and fresh looking with superb colour. The white back is mostly very clean as well – just a trace of light toning near the fold with a small magenta mark in manufacture. Overall, one of the finest inserts I have seen for this album, this so often missing and quite rare in its own right.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a polylined Polydor style inner that is British patented and including the 117 date-code which translate to November 1967. Aged, but not a bad way really, darkened paper and more so on the seam adhesive areas. Two crisp undamaged window circles and the lining still reasonably clear. Some lightish creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): so overall, averages out excellent. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A few light visible marks on side one, but practically all superficial with no audio affect, side two is especially impressive with little. With scrutiny under my grading lamp, light surface traces are seen as well, but how many vintage mono records will avoid minor blemishes like this as a bare minimum? The most important factor is the avoidance of penetrating stylus scratches and groove wear, this mono record plays superbly for most-all. Visually and audibly, this should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This second Hendrix classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault, and no tracking issues*. A couple or three light clicks at the very start of side one apart, this is hugely impressive, and I can hardly remember a copy with less audio issues to the ruthless ‘EXP’ than this. With the delicate beginning, this often suffered needle drops and jolts from those vintage record players that tracked at vast weights. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally carefully handled. Few records of this vintage and type will avoid surface blemishes or minor marks at best – let’s get real. With many seen trashed and played to oblivion, this puts a copy this nice into true perspective. A couple of light clicks on ‘ESP’, probably equals the least I have heard. Little else of note throughout, and this impressive record will take a huge amount of beating especially in mono. Still many people’s choice, it was the mode of the time. A real joy to play-grade, even on my very revealing system (all listed further down in detail), such copies not really designed for such scrutiny, but heard this clean, they are a thing of beauty. Nothing of any real note after the first couple of second spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the music and vocals all focused and clear. This could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
