Description
The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Volume One is a 1965 album by the jazz musician Sun Ra. The back cover describes it as an "album of compositions and arrangements by Sun Ra played by Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra". The album is an example of the radical break which Sun Ra's music of that time had made with "previous notions of melody or harmony". Although heavily percussive, the music also dispenses with a continuous beat; instead Ra's music is reconstructed around "interweaving compositional and improvisatory creative principles with programmatic affects".
The album was originally released as The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, with a B/W sleeve designed by Ra himself. This was subsequently replaced with a new colored sleeve by Howard Bernstein & Baby Jerry. After The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Volume Two was released in 1966, “Vol. 1” was added to the title of this album for all pressings after that.
THIS COPY is a 1968 repress with the colored cover (see photo) on the ESP Disk label (see Notes, below).
The vinyl sounds old - e.g. some light background crackle in the quiet areas - but per a test listen, the LP played nicely, with no problems. Overall, the vinyl is in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition.
The original cover has some overall light rubbing / shelf wear (from before getting a poly bag). It remains quite sturdy, with no splits or other major flaws. Overall, the cover is in Very Good [VG] or better condition. (I would say better :-)
The inner sleeve may or may not be original. I has slight browning, which argues for age, but it is plain white with square corners and a center label hole. Original or not, with no splits and only one small stain near one corner, the inner sleeve is in Very Good Plus [VG+] condition.
