THE GROUP SOLO “Hip-Hug-Her” 1967 Trinidad LP MICHELLE RECORDS LPX-1
LP has original plastic covering on it (not shrink wrap).
This mostly instrumental 1967 LP from Trinidad features two Booker T and the MG’s songs, a Rolling Stones cover, two songs from the movie Black Orpheus, and one original soul instrumental.
Hammond-type organ leads by Robert Bailey on many of the songs. Lots of good twangy/garage/boogaloo and soul/jazz guitar work.
Sounds run the gamut from raw soul and garage to Big Beat, latin and jazz.
Almost no info online about this one that I can find!
Two cuts have vocals (As Tears Go By and Those Little White Lies) and one has “voice-over” comments + la-la-la’s (Sockit To Me).
CONDITION
COVER = VG to VG+
A cardboard “insert” type of cover. Front cover and back cover are separate inserts. All encased in what I believe is the original plastic-sleeve coating so the jacket functions as a normal LP cover.
Wear to the plastic coating on the cardboard inserts and creasing to the cardboard inserts.
DISC (AURAL GRADING) = VG+.
Play graded on a Denon DP-7F direct drive turntable.
Light background noise, mostly not distracting; the occasional light pop, not bad at all; no distortion to music; no skips.
DISC (VISUAL GRADING) = VG-.
LABELS = VG
TRACK LISTING
A,1 Hip-Hug-Her good raw instrumental cover of the Booker T and the MG’s classic.
A,2 As Tears Go By Excellent cover of the Rolling Stones - female harmony vocals; organ solo; arpeggio guitar
A,3 Samba De Orfeu (Theme from Black Orpheus) instrumental; flute and organ lead
A,4 Those Little White Lies 1st verse, instrumental, garage-beat style; male vocal comes in.
A,5 Summertime instrumental
B,1 Sockit To Me (originally by Willie Bobo, not the Mitch Ryder song) instrumental with voice-over (“sockittome, sockittome, sockittome”; “Tuttifrutti, Tuttifrutti, Tuttifrutti”) reminiscent of El Watusi in that way. I like this version better than the original! nice garage-y guitar fills; guitar solo in a style reminiscent of Boogaloo Joe Jones.
B,2 Green Onions Booker T classic of course; good twangy guitar solo!
B,3 Soul Pudding (original instrumental by organist Robert Bailey)
B,4 Black Orpheus (Manha De Carnaval)
B,5 Coming Home Baby (the Herbie Mann instrumental, later done as a vocal by Mel Torme)
