Description
Beautiful copy of the original 1957 pressing of The Great Blues Singers, on Riverside LP RLP-12-121. Original blue squares cover and blue and silver microphone labels. A fantastic early collection of even earlier blues singers of the 1920s, featuring rare recordings of Bessie Smith, Trixie Smith, Ma Rainey, Chippie Hill, Ida Cox, Mary Johnson, Sara Martin, and Hociel Thomas. A few are 1940s Circle Records recordings, and the rest are from the 1920s. Most appeared here for the first time since their original releases. This was a hugely influential release at the time, and was owned by just about every jazz fan as well as every college folknik. Dylan supposedly had this album and was hereby turned on to Ma Rainey and others. Anyhow this is a beautiful copy. The disc is shiny and looks barely played, though there are a couple of superficial marks to be seen. They are very minor and do not affect the play at all. The whole thing plays nearly flawlessly and just beautifully. The cover is taped into a plastic covering (it could easily be removed without harming the cover at all), with a tab at the spine for easy access. This copy was in the collection of a renown early LA jazz DJ who kept all his records this way. Anyhow the cover is in excellent shape, with no split seams or even corner dings. There is tape along the edges but not for repair so much as to prevent splits. It could be removed with some lighter fluid but it isn't any big deal. Looks fine. Anyhow this is a truly top original copy. Hard to beat.
