The problem facing this band was one of a lack of identity. There's plenty of musical associations here to keep things interesting, not least the fact that the core members here backed Joe Cocker in 1969 and would go on to back Marianne Faithfull in the mid-seventies. Bruce Rowland would later join Fairport Convention, and there is also the presence of Henry McCullough, who was briefly a member of Wings, thus giving this album a loose connection for completist Beatle collectors. Still there's no obvious leader, which is possibly why, despite the high quality of the mainstream rock/pop on offer here, "The Grease Band" album remains something of a forgotten release in the history of Harvest Records.
It's nice to have a first pressing from 1971 on the Harvest label in such strong Near Mint condition as well. This one plays with a dense, powerful and clear audio quality. The standard of the music is such that, the occasional light pop or click doesn't impose on your enjoyment, although I have to stress that for occasional I really do mean just one or two during my entire play-grade! I didn't pick up any surface noise while I was playing the album either for that matter. My guess, judging by the very light spindle wear, is that this album has been played a few times, and it has clearly been handled with total care and attention. My close visual inspection revealed nothing other than the lightest of totally non-sounding paper scuffs, and the look of the album is dark, clean and glossy. A nice rare item basically.
COVER CONDITION: EXCELLENT
This is a gatefold sleeve with a textured surface that is in a truly Excellent condition. It has remained completely intact and has a bright unblemished clean appearance on the front back and the inner spread. The cover has been pressed on nice thick, substantial card and consequently doesn't have any ring-wear. The only factor that shows a bit of age and warrants a mention is the presence of some very early stage scuffing on the top and bottom edges and the spine. Really though, this is barely noticeable and is never serious enough to cause a tear or a hole, essentially this album cover has been handled for over three decades with the utmost care and it definitely shows it!
