Label/Format: Warner Bros – Original orange labels (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with light to moderate spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Very few on side one, more on side two, but these being incredibly fine and faint as seen under angled light. I am confident this record has received only modest usage with very clean playing surfaces and sound. Just one small blemish: a tiny mark has three or four clicks with a milli-second jump on an instrumental part of ‘St Stephen’ that means is notices less and goes in less than a blink of an eye. That apart, a lovely clean copy of this scarce original.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good and not untypical weight for this label at this time.

Rarity: Rare: a commercial non-starter and UK orange label copies are incredibly hard to find. With one of the greatest psych covers of the 60s (please check out the amazing details in close-up), this is stoned-out Grateful Dead as their very best.

Brief Info: Pronounced OX-OH-MOX-OH-AH this was the band’s third album and now at their most experimental. This is not a commercial album and at times is very ‘out-there’ – just listen to the psych weirdness of ‘What’s Become of the Baby’, one of the best ‘stoned-out’ classics put to record. The whole album has an unsettling effect and from the outset had no hope of commercial success. The Grateful Dead were never as popular in the UK as their native US and sales were never that impressive here hence the difficulty in finding the early albums on the original format and in fine conditions. This copy plays very well bar the aforementioned milli-second skip, and overall has that strange eerie deliberate low-fi psych sound only available on the early mixes. A very fine cover too and one of the late 60s classics. So both record and cover give mild hints to their vintage, but finding these a great deal better is never easy and overall, little to fault.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front lamination. The rear has three external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Lamination & Front: One of my favourite 60s covers: colorful and very out-there. This front does it splendid justice too with shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has no lifting. A little mild dulling around the rim shape under light and a few fine edge creases, but little detracts from the bright vivid artwork that still looks great.

Cover Back: The main unprotected back panel has a little mild grubbiness and a tiny few small tone spots. A tiny nick on the left edge as well (and I do mean tiny). Barely any rubbing or creasing and no ring wear. The three flipbacks are solid and crisp with just the usual hairline surface creases on the laminate. Any burring to the ends very light and fine and minimal traces of any grubbiness to the laminate ends. A small mark near the bottom left corner tip.

Top Edge: Very straight with full laminate and barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp, but not the crispest cuts in manufacture, with little wear. Any thickening or burring very light and few. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compress, the end are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and barely cracked laminate. Just the odd fine hairline crease.

Corners: The tips have rubbed, but I am sure the spine pair showed white tips from new. Fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this very colourful late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please most-all collectors with only gentle clues given to it’s 43-years-of-age.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. A plain white, polylined inner with very clear lining as seen through two near pristine window circles. Hardly any creasing and only lightly darkened with age. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: but with a tiny mark on ‘St Stephen’ with three or four light clicks and a milli-second jump on a non-vocal part – blink and you will miss it. In fact, it may not even happen with a finer magnet stylus that invariably track a little lighter than my moving coil. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy played a few times, but overall, few other marks or blemishes, even under angled light. This one small mark the only mishap this rare record has and there is no way I am not offering because of that. With many of these types seen totally trashed and unlistable, or even playable at all, this is still a very impressive example. The one blemish of course means not for the very discerning, but I feel sure it will please many, less critical collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful acid-psych album plays for practically above it’s high visual grading with little else to fault bar the small mark mentioned above. A milli-second jump is far less obvious on a non-vocal part and really registered little. It has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is quite unusual with a strange mix which I guess was quite deliberate. This was later remixed, so the early issues are the only way to hear this in it’s original form. Any surface sounds barely ever register and no pops or other noteworthy clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing and this really does have some very quiet moments. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Little (the obvious apart) spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, spaced-out album. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – only if the small mark is acceptable of course.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
