"If there was ever a band that burned out rather than fading away, it was the Germs. One of the most infamous bands to rise from the Los Angeles punk scene in the '70s, the Germs were a group that, even by the edgy standards of punk, left remarkable chaos in their wake, and had a seismic impact on the local scene during their short but memorable run. Punishingly raw and confrontational, the twin centers of the band's sound were the howling vocals and lyrical barrage of singer Darby Crash and the rough-edged but fluid guitar work of Pat Smear, with bassist Lorna Doom and drummer Don Bolles providing the relatively solid foundation that kept their songs from flying off the rails..."

"The Germs recorded two singles (with alternate tracks), an album-length demo session, and one full-length LP, (GI),[1] each more focused and powerful than the last. Crash was, despite his erratic behavior, generally regarded as a brilliant lyricist (a contemporary critic described him as "ransacking the dictionary"), and the final line-up of Smear, Doom and Bolles had become a world-class rock ensemble by the recording of (GI), turning in a performance that spurred an LA Weekly reviewer to write: "This album leaves exit wounds". It is considered one of the first hardcore punk records and has a near-mythic status among punk rock fans. "

"Trying to get the straight story of Los Angeles punk band Germs is like trying to piece together the timeline of a debaucherous night out: The specifics are blurry, the headache is blinding, and everybody has a different take on what happened. One lucid fact pierces through the hangover: Germs were a mess of contradictions. Doomed front man Darby Crash was a well-read savant and a mumbling cretin, crowds adored and abhorred them, and the music they made in four belligerent years reached decades beyond their downfall. By the time their sole studio album (GI) arrived in 1979, Germs had swaggered their way to local infamy, and Crash had crowned himself the genius king of Hollywood’s juvenile delinquents. He died by suicide a little more than a year later at 22".
