THE GENTLE SOUL – OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM / SONG FOR THREE (COLUMBIA 4-44152) (PROMO) (VG++)

From Los Angeles, CA, The Gentle Soul were the songwriting duo of Rick Stanley and Pamela Polland.  They were at the right place at the right time, playing the folk circuit in Hollywood at the Troubadour Club, and made many friends in high places.  They quickly caught the attention of legendary producer Terry Melcher, and he and his session musicians filled out their sound to such perfection that they should have been a household name.  This is their second of three singles, and Our National Anthem has to be in the top ten iconic Folk anthems of the 1960’s, but most people never heard it back in the day.  This song, co-written by both Stanley & Polland is beyond great, it’s phenomenal!  By the way, the “session men” for most of their recordings included Hal Blaine, Ry Cooder and Mike Deasy just to name a few. The flip side, Song for Three, is another strong folk number co-penned by Polland. Melcher was apparently pleased with the first two singles and signed them up for a full LP, released in 1968.  But for some reason, it didn’t include Our National Anthem.  This may have been a big mistake, because the LP didn’t make many waves and the duo split up shortly thereafter. This copy is in fantastic shape, graded as VG++ and plays as EX.  This specific record is certainly an oddity, because it is a stock copy on the red Columbia label, with a white promotional sticker stuck onto the label.  There must be a last minute production back-story to this, but I don’t know it.  Nonetheless, it’s the only red label pressing of this 45 I have ever seen, and 25 years after I acquired it, I still haven’t found any other red label versions of this record.  In 2002, a CD comp of all the Gentle Soul music was released and it’s highly recommended.  Check out the scans and audio samples.

[isdntekvideo] SELLER:

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook.  The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations.  Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.

My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future.  Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.
