Offering is original owner’s “THE GENIUS OF RAY CHARLES”, Mono, 1962 Repressing, Atlantic Red /Purple Label, 1312, 12” LP, 33-1/3 RPM, black vinyl record.
SPECIFIC DESCRIPTIONS
· Album Cover / Jacket – VERY GOOD+. The front cover, with its color photo of Ray Charles, has retained its original laminated glossy sheen & rich colors. The front has a 5” light, age toning mark along its right lower side (photo no. 4). The back cover shows age toning along all four (4) sides (photos nos. 5-7). The jacket has no splits, tears or corner wear. The original vendor 4-line ink stamp – “New Rochelle House of Music etc.” is located on the back cover’s left side (photos nos. 5-7). Nat Hentoff’s (Co-Editor, The Jazz Review) back cover sleeve notes are extensive & enlightening, to include chronicling the special musical collaborations between Ray Charles & Quincy Jones in creating this album, in addition to their early days in Seattle.
· Vinyl – CONDITION: EXCELLENT. Seldom played, with no wear, its vinyl playing surfaces are clean and very bright, “like new”. Pressed in deep groove, Both sides have retained their original gloss, with no scratches or feelable surface marks. Each side has several non-feelable surface marks. The iconic red/purple/white/fan bullseye Atlantic labels are EXCELLENT with no spindle wear, fading, scratches, stains or discoloration.
· Inner Liner Record Sleeve – CONDITION: MINT. This original, very collectible, PURPLE Atlantic Bullseye inner liner paper sleeve is pristine, having retained its purple and B&W colors (photos & fonts), with no fading, yellowing or discoloration. There are no seam tears/rips, stains, creases or folds. One (1) side has forty (40) B&W, 1½” x 1 ½” photos of Atlantic Records’ recording artists album releases (mid-50's to early 60's) to include Charlie Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Erroll Garner, La Ver Baker, John Coltrane, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Bobby Short, Herbie Mann & Woody Herman (see photos nos. 10-11). The other side lists the entire Atlantic 12” LP series record catalogue in three (3) price categories - $3.98/$4.98/$9.98.

BACKGROUND:
The Genius of Ray Charles is a 1959 Ray Charles album, released in October by Atlantic Records, the seventh album since the debut Ray Charles in 1957. The album consists of swinging pop with a big band arrangement. It comprises the first half of big band songs and the second half of string -backed ballads.
The album showcased Charles' breakout from rhythm and blues and onto a broader musical stage. Atlantic Records gave him full support in production and arrangements. As originally presented, the A side of the album featured the Ray Charles band with David “Fathead” Newman supplemented by players from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands, and arrangements by Quincy Jones.
The B side of the original album consists of six ballads with arrangements by Ralph Burns and a large string orchestra. Charles's performance of "Come Rain or Shine", a song identified with Frank Sinatra, brought public attention to his voice alone without the "distractions" of his soulful piano and his snappy band.
In 2000, Q magazine included The Genius of Ray Charles in their list of the "Best Soul Albums of All Time" and wrote that it "finds the great man swinging, emoting, cajoling and laughing his way through a selection of standards that he makes his own ... it exudes pure class."
