THE FREE SPIRITS "OUT OF SIGHT AND SOUND" ABC S-593 1967 IN SHRINK
The search for the first jazz rock band would most likely stop and start with this band of musicians. Fronted by the amazing guitarist Larry Coryell, who would eventually go on to Gary Buton and a long solo career, this is his first band's recording. Formed in NYC in late 1966 the album was ignored by the public even when a picture sleeve 45 was released of "Tattoo Man/Girl of the Mountain". Although heavy on the reverb, produced by Bob Thiele this is a pretty goood representation of the band although they were trying to fit into the rock genret more than a jazz leaning as they would in concert. After Larry and drummer Bob Moses left the band carried on and put out an album as Everything is Everything. Twelve songs written by rhythm guitarist Chip Baker or Coryell ring true to their roots...Fine musicianship and clever arrangements and a Long Lost Jazz-Rock classic....
