With guitarist Hoshal Wright replacing founding member Mike Bloomfield and Herbie Rich taking full control of the organ you have a definite sequel to the Electric Flag's March 1968 debut LP, A Long Time Comin'.
The original album had "An American Music Band" under the group's name, and that slogan becomes the subtitle of this follow-up.
Where 60 percent of the first album was written by the Paul Butterfield exiles Bloomfield and Goldberg, the songwriting is pretty evenly split between the two songs each by Buddy Miles, Harvey Brooks, and Nick Gravenites, with Brooks and Gravenites co-writing an additional title, "Nothing to Do."
This makes for a heavier blues recording, but the big revelations are the cover songs, Dr. John's "Qualified" and an unbelievable version of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny," which Buddy Miles just encompasses and devours. Virgil Gonsalves' flute at the end of "Sunny" is frosting on the cake, but the key is that a song which was a smash on three formats — R&B, country, and pop charts, and captured the heart of jazz musicians from Ella Fitzgerald to Pat Martino, gets this total reinvention here.
Alto sax player Stemsy Hunter is wonderful on lead vocals for "With Time There Is Change," written by co-producer/bassist Harvey Brooks and perhaps the most captivating original here.
They all trade lead vocalist duties, from Nick Gravenites on "Nothing to Do" to Herbie Rich on the Dr. John cover.
It's an amazingly dense set of recordings which, years later, form a remarkable thread of sounds by musicians who worked with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the latter day Big Brother & the Holding Company, and who were taking the original concept a step further into uncharted waters.
Where the Electric Prunes were a fun psychedelic moment, The Electric Flag didn't get the same immediate recognition but the material here is highly enjoyable, and in hindsight, very important
Track Listing: (the play is more or less continuous)
SIDE 1: SOUL SEARCHIN' / SUNNY / WITH TIME THERE IS CHANGE / NOTHING TO DO / SEE TO YOUR NEIGHBOUR
SIDE 2: QUALIFIED / HEY, LITTLE GIRL / MYSTERY / MY WOMAN THAT HANGS AROUND THE HOUSE (listed on sleeve) CAN'T FIND HAPPINESS (listed on label)
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with just a little rubbing around the spindle hole but barely a spindle trace to be seen - this copy has seen little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - EXCELLENT+
VINYL Audio: Sensational audio delivery - crystal clear, warm, rich and detailed sound - tremendous deep, heavy MONO cut - very impressive. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no loud click/pops or real surface noise present (just a touch on the run-ins, not during the music itself). This is wonderfully clean pressing which plays pretty much perfectly throughout with superb clarity of sound, no discernible groove-wear and no distortion and is strictly graded a strong EXCELLENT++ for audio - fantastic LP
SLEEVE: The original 'Patents Pending' EJ DAY front laminated sleeve has suffered a little wear over the years but it is good and solid with no structural damage. The front laminate still has a nice deep, glossy sheen with some creases to the laminate and record impression. The spine is rubbed which has obscured most of the text but the top and bottom edges show very little storage wear. The unlaminated back is pretty clean overall, a very nice example - VERY GOOD+
