Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and attractive with only a small few fine and faint spindle marks that show little.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This self-titled album for Harvest was their third, a band that always gave an audience at great time at the festivals between 1970-73 – they almost became a staple diet at these events. Their Harvest albums were always interestingly packaged and this is no different. Known by fans as the ‘Meat Cover’ cover, this is pretty high on bad taste. Check out closely, amongst the hanging meat on hooks, is a man, this has to be the most controversial of the Hipgnosis designed covers. The actual design on the front and back is lovely, it’s lightly textured and have leather-like surfaces. Of course, this makes the cover prone to wear. Musically slightly more refined than some of their albums, and for me, one of their very best. This a fine example that plays very well, a couple or three clicks at the end of the first track apart. The unforgiving cover has a little edge rubbing but little else overall and still looks impressive as-seen. Not had one of these for some time and always great to hear it again.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces. The outer faces have complex fine texturing with intricate patterning, the inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back A quite famous and mildly controversial cover. So often ruined by heavy rubbing, creasing and ring wear. The card is quite soft, and almost feels like a quality leather. There is a little light patchy rubbing near the edges and corner tips that is seldom avoided on covers like this. Some fine creasing mostly on the spine edges and a very fine and faint rim rub on the back. This being the faintest hint of ring wear you will see on this cover, this only seen on the left side. No sticker issues and generally clean and still fresh. These outer faces will always prove difficult to find a great deal better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A fine gentle crease on the left face to the left of the fold near the bottom, it shows little. Any wear or marks are few and faint, also lacking the usual heavy finger marks this surface usually attracts.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with only light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Again straight, most rubbing patchy and light, but more moderate near the ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All quite sharp with any thickening light seen viewd end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with some fairly patchy compression, this is folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Any surface rubbing light mostly near the ends. A fairly fine crease line has eroded some text as-seen, but much is still present.

Corners: Moderate corner tip rubbing with fine shape and no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: Always a difficult cover, but apart from some reasonably mild edge rubbing, this one has fared well. And with the main areas with little wear, it remains ‘attractive’, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an attractive Harvest lined inner that is still attached. As usual, some edge darkening of the seam adhesive but minimal traces of any creasing and no edge splits or repairs. This is a very fine example indeed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(+): a fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly very light, some wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Just one small, more noticeable mark near the end of the first song has four clicks, little else. Visually a nice record that should please many collectors, but clearly not for purists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality third album plays even above it’s nice visual grading with little else to fault bar those tiny few brief clicks near the very end of ‘Evening Over Rooftops’. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a fine clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will have fewer blemishes on this album that does have some very quiet passages, I really enjoyed hearing this one again via this very nice copy. Little of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended as long as perfection is not mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
