The Earls were a one-hit outfit, best known for their No. 29 hit from 1963, "Remember When," a perennial romance/nostalgia anthem that got regular airings on oldies stations from the late 1960's onward. By the time they were on Old Town, they were actually something of a hybrid, a do-wop outfit in spirit who had a self-contained band-Dick Levister (organ), Jimmy Fracasti (guitar), and Bobby Tzibuzio (drums) made a pretty good core group for Larry Chance (lead), Jack Wray (bass), Ronnie Calabrese (tenor), and Eddie Harder (tenor). Their sound was a slick and ornate version of r&b vocal harmony, generally coming more from the Italian than the Black side of the tradition (they were a racially mixed group, with one Black member), imbued with pop music slickness. This in no way detracted from the beauty, beat, or sheer attractiveness of what they produced-it simply means that, given the least encouragement, they veered toward the smooth, commercial side of music, especially where Larry Chance's solo outtings were concerned. This 22 song collection is mastered well and includes most of the essentials and a lot more besides-apart from "Remember When" and similarly patterned efforts like "Cry Cry Cry," and the more sedate "Remember Me Baby," there are overtly pop sides like "Don't Forget," predictable if enjoyable dance numbers like "Let's Waddle" (which owes more than a bit of its content to "Twist And Shout"), and glorious efforts like "Never," in which the vocal interplay (and, particularly, Chance's performance) remains astounding no matter how many times one hears it; and a version of "Old Man River" that's sufficiently dramatic but ultimately can't carry the running time it's been given. The sound is more than acceptable, though one wishes there were new, more detailed notes, rather than a reprint of the vague jacket notes from the original LP of this title.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-)- TO VERY GOOD-, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded. THE RECORD PLAYS WITH AUDIBLE, BUT ENTIRELY BEARABLE SURFACE NOISE (LIGHT HISS), BUT WITH AN INCREDIBLY LIFE-LIKE FIDELITY AND NO DISTORTION WHATSOEVER

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(e)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.(nothing significant)

-          Small water stain noted in one corner (less than 2 square inches in size, more visible on the front side)

-         The cover has a few pressure points and lines (as if someone attempted to write on it with the ballpoint pen, but ran out of ink) (has to be viewed under certain angle to notice)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
