Label/Format: Elektra – original orange and black format with matt, fairly rough textured surfaces on the inner areas. The outside ring rim areas are smoother. These have the ‘Polydor Records’ credits on the 6 o’clock position as seen.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks only very light, few and faint, this pair of original Doors Elektra labels up there with the very best I have seen to date. All evidence suggests this fantastic album has hardly been played.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 124 grams. A little lighter than some records of this era, but it’s the quality of vinyl used and pressing quality that is paramount, and this is superb and pure with sound quality to match. This vintage classic was a joy to play-grade.

Rarity: Very scarce, I have always found this the hardest Doors album to find, especially in better condition. The wear-prone cover is impressive, especially the main four faces, the record is very clean and appears little used and plays impressively with no inherent pressing faults or noises. That is often not the case, the ‘difficult’ trace being ‘The Unknown Solidier’ that often suffers pressing issues, this has none here, or anywhere and it will never prove easy to match or find better.

Musicians: Jim Morrison – lead vocals; Robby Krieger – lead guitar, rhythm guitar; Ray Manzarek – organ, piano, keyboard bass; John Densmore – drums. Occasional bass is played by Douglas Lubahn, Kerry Magness, Leroy Vinegar.

Brief Info: The Doors are one of my favourite bands of all-time and I will rarely even consider offering any of their albums that fail to please me for sound quality. I have always found this a difficult album as a first pressing, often let-down by indifferent pressing quality and unwanted sounds. This has NO such issues and was a pleasure to hear again from an original vinyl source. This was The Door’s third album and last available in both mono and stereo formats – this being a stereo copy. Another brilliant set, now with more variation, and in the US, one of their most popular as their reputation, especially live grew. Personally, I prefer the stereo pressing of this album, it images brilliantly, and the song ‘Spanish Caravan’ has jaw-drop fidelity and separation. Morrison’s expressive vocals are magnificent throughout, what a vocalist this man was, so sadly lost at far to young an age. This a rare opportunity with a record especially this clean and hardly played.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: the main four surfaces better still. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces This has the correct EKS Catalogue Number. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and including the ‘Manufactured by POLYDOR RECORDS LTD’ text on the back as well. The basic plain white inner is included that has the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Cover Front: The front is impressive and grades nearer excellent(+) (at least). A little very fine patchy edge rub traces and a tiny corner tip dink (bottom right), there is little else to fault on this splendid front. A couple of fine raised lines are felt near the top right, but there is no real evidence there was a sticker here, the surface is perfect on this area, and largely the same on the entire front with any other marks or blemishes tiny, very few and faint. Very clean, fresh and barely any creases at all. The band graphic looks magnificent as seen in close-up and this classic vintage front will seldom be seen a great deal better.

Cover Back: Very prone to wear, but this has survived in fantastic condition, arguably ever better than the front. This, and the front have no fading for which this cover is known to often suffer, this back has very deep vibrant colour that simply reminds of as-issued. Again, barely a crease to be seen, any trace of rim impression or rubbing bordering on minuscule. Also no writing or sticker issues, just the odd tiny edge rub or chip or two, again, few will match or better this easily these days.

Cover Centrefold: The black lizard side is stunning, again as seen in close-up with barely anything of note to fault. The pale left text side will rarely ever avoid set-off where the black surface ink opposite rests upon it when closed. But this has very little, with the least I have ever seen, any traces little, light and faint. A fantastic centre with both faces very impressive indeed as-seen.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat, not quite parallel, but reasonably close. Any rubbing is very light and patchy. I doubt few will show much less.

Bottom Edges: More moderate less patchy rubbing on these storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The closed front is very sharp and crisp. The back entrances edges are neat and mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. All are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The spine does have some patchy rubbing and chipping, but remains solid and straight with any compression or tilt light. There is some text rubbing and the white main title wording is quite faded or eroded. So this area does remind of age compared to the rest of the main printed areas, but still a very respectable spine as-seen.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained, some better still, just the tiny dink on the bottom right front as mentioned.

Cover Summary: Never an easy cover for several reasons, but this one still looks very attractive on the crucial large graphic surfaces with less overall wear than many these days. This should please many collectors, but as the grading suggests, not the more connoisseurs or purists.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic plain white unlined inner. Two neat crisp window circles with all edges fully intact with no repairs. The paper with only gentle darkening to politely remind of age. This has the original ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. Leaving this inside the gatefold area will protect against future set-off.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light, barely anything being honest. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant psych-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises – that a crucial factor on any record, but this I know does have them sometimes, but not here. Few available copies will match, let outperform this early first UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been quite well stored (the record especially), I doubt if it had been out of the cover for decades and certainly carefully handled. Remember, this album was actually purchased and released when the iconic singer Jim Morrison was still with us, and just holding this gem gives immense satisfaction. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended – such clean copies of this record seldom surface better now.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
