Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the greatest US bands of the 1960s and early 1970s, fronted by the vocalist Jim Morrison. ‘LA Woman’ was the final Doors album to feature this iconic singer. This remarkable release reaffirmed the quartet’s grasp of blues-rock. Beset by personal and professional problems, they retreated to a rehearsal room, cast such pressures aside and recorded a masterpiece that included several of their most memorable compositions. The musicianship is uniformly excellent, the interplay between guitarist Robbie Krieger and keyboard player Ray Manzarek exuded confidence, while the strength of Morrison’s voice – now very much deeper than on earlier albums – add an unmistakable resonance. His tragic death within a week of the album’s completion inevitably casts a shadow over it’s sublime content, especially the eerie rain and thunder with the funereal electric piano of ‘Riders On The Storm’. Has any original line-up band ever ended their career on such a magnificent high? I have dismiss of course the two non-Morrison albums that followed, hence the term ‘original’. This stunning album surprisingly only peaked at Number 28 in the UK charts, whereas Number 9 in their native US. Later copes have a solid, non-see-through cover and no graphic inner sleeve, only the early copies have the more intricate ‘window’ sleeve. The original inner gives the yellow effect through the ‘glass’ and has the controversial crucifix illustration. With Morrison’s rapid fall to self-destruction, quite how this band held this together to produce one of the greatest albums of the entire 1970s was little short of remarkable – ‘LA Woman’ is arguably the greatest ‘epitaph’ album ever made. This is a generally very fine copy – a little cover wear, which is so hard to avoid – but it will better many seen. The fragile inner remains intact with no tape or repairs, that is difficult to find as such, and the record itself plays impressively clean with little to fault despite a few light surface marks. Not a copy for perfectionists, but many fans and collectors will enjoy a copy that does the memory of this band high justice.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): a single unlaminated format with the original round corners and see-through screen-printed window. The white ‘DOORS’ text is embossed. The rare yellow crucifix inner gives the yellow effect through the window. Printed and made in England by Shorewood with the scarcer ‘Patents Pending’ text. This has the dual catalogue number K 42090 and EKS-75011 numbers on the back, although the official number in the UK was K 42090.

Cover Front: This is a well-known difficult cover and seldom avoids often heavy wear or damage. This has a little fine creasing and mild rubbing towards the sides. Slight thickening of the window frame, but no splits or tears (or repairs). The screen-printed ‘glass’, is impressive with any marks few and fine seen under light. No sticker issues and retaining strong colour, this very fragile and unforgiving front still looks nice.

Cover Back: Largely the same again in terms of rubbing, but few creases, and the lack of heavy ring wear is always a significant plus on this side.

Top Edge: Any rubbing little, gentle and light, a little thickening to the rear card end.

Bottom Edge: Light to moderate (near the ends) rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: A little thickening seen end-on. Still quite fine overall for this storage edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, but thin, these were quite flat when first made, hence the text is seen more on the back face which has been the case on just about all I have seen. More unusually, all spine text is present and unworn. The surface has a small few mostly light rubs or chips as seen. All edges remain straight and generally neat.

Corners: These curved corners are reasonably crisp and fairly neat. These are naturally opened or vented in manufacture, hence the card becomes single thickness. So some thickening, burring and rubbing will occur in most cases,as here, this mostly on the bottom storage edge. All respectable again with no damages but enough to remind of it’s fragility.

Cover Summary: A very good solid all-round example of a difficult original cover. It remains attractive and fully intact, the window area will better many, if not most offered. Not for the cover purist who want ‘perfection’ as any cost – such examples for originals are at a real premium and rarely seen. So even with some hints of wear and age, this will still please many fans and collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): with little to fault which is seldom seen. Generally clean with only a few light and small tone spot traces seen up close. The lack of creasing, fading and edge splits a real bonus for this unlined inner. This infamous inner sleeve was only available with first issues then withdrawn, it is never easy to find this clean and neat, an integral part of this album and never easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with only light usage on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Viewed in average room light, little even registers and the record plays impressively with no penetrating stylus scratches. Visually a quality record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been fairly well stored and handled. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
