Label/Format: Elektra – original red format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: All four immaculate, almost pristine and looking barely handled or likely played. Just a tiny few ultra fine and faint spindle traces on the intense red finish. So incredibly clean and fresh, they could almost pass for new.

Cat Number: 2665002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 138 / 140 grams. An impressive weight for this first issue.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Red label originals of this superb live double set are rare, the book prices are a joke. This was not available too long on the firsts red labels before being repressed on the new Butterfly format and then with a new Kinney number. First issues in barely played condition that offer little short of pristine sound are very hard to find. Most copies of this are on the Butterfly label and later ones even foreign pressed with the shiny covers.

Brief Info: Stunning double live set that includes new material and famed for its longer version of ‘The Celebration of the Lizard’ – the musical part of this Morrison poem was included on the band’s third album Waiting for the Sun. This was initially intended to be the full version and to occupy the whole of one side, but the band thought it did not work. The full version of this famous epic was only performed at a very few of their concerts. This set was recorded between August 1969 to June 1970 and has no overdubbing, only editing to put a set like this together – it’s absolutely live. Morrison is in fine voice here and the set has a fair degree of intensity, none more so than when Morrison bellows to the audience to ‘Shut Up!, when talking on a quiet passage. This is cleanest and best sound copy of this landmark live album I have ever heard on an original red label pressing. I regard this as one of the most difficult Doors albums to find a genuine first issue simply because it was not available too long before being repressed on the new Butterfly label. Four gleaming mear unmarked sides and an attractive cover. It does have a little rubbing to spine but a highly unforgiving cover that is massive prone to ringwear and rubbing, the main four faces are seldom seen much better. Remember, these original records are much heavier than most subsequent ones, thus they press into the matt-finished surfaces more resulting in often penetrating white circles. This one has not been affected like this and I emphasise quickly, this cover is an original with the correct catalogue number – beware of substitutions. For those wanting these records almost as made and offering sound to near perfection, well they’re here and they sound fantastic, it’s Absolutely Live, that simple.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: rarely seen devoid of ringwear and rubbing.

Cover Grade and Format: I cannot grade this delicate cover much less than Excellent. An unlaminated gatefold format with a flatt matt finish. It was printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: A very slight rub trace near the top edge but the most wear seen is some rubbing to the lower part of the spine edge fold. Hardly excessive and fine, but the only real rubbing of any real note. Barely any creasing or rubbing to the main area’s artwork and clean with fine freshness retained. Morrison with his famous belt and leather pants looks wonderful and iconic.

Cover Back: The back is even bettr with little to fault at all, a small minor rub to the bottom area of the spine fold apart, it has little else. Deeply rich in colour, as per the front and the lack of ringwear is noteworthy and significant, this will take some beating.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically faultless and looking little short of immaculate.

Top Edges: Faint rub traces only up to the corners.

Bottom Edges: Light to light+ patchy rubbing, being the resting edges, this is no real surprise.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, both guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Some patchy rubbing mostly to the top fold and ends. Solid, straight with minimal compression, folded square, both right edges meet up quite closely together and parallel. Some very slight clipping to the top of the text but not to the band name and title.

Corners: Light to moderate rubbing to thet corners with fine to very fine (right) shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this famous (and original) cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. I suppose ‘perfect’ ones will exist, but try finding them, this one takes few prisoners and most offer significant wear. This highly attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inners: Both the Polydor style polylined inners are included as mirror image design pairs. The shop put the record’s number on both near the bottom edge right corner. These are guaranteed original and importantly, are both date coded 31 /0770 and 32 /0770. Both have moderately toned on the edges and become fairly brown. But both have secure unsplit edges and they have beautifully neat and clear windows, neither have any creasing of any real significance, but do look a little aged – at 40-years-old, have they not earned the right?

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ to Mint(-) and a truly superb visual pair that are super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A weighty pair and package that only the first issues really offer. A pair with barely any noteworthy visual blemishes – one faint surface scuff on side four has NO sound whatsoever. Anything else are just ultra fine and faint surface traces few records ever avoid if you look hard enough. Both barely played and sounding magnificent. Visually super records that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a well recorded and produced live set which is exceptional for it’s period. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that does have a few quiet passages. Few copies will outperform this true first UK issue, I feel sure. I am certain both records have hardy been played and have been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these top quality records. This pair will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
