THE CRICKETS – The Chirping Crickets *ORIG Vogue Coral LP* LVA 9081 (UK, Mono, 1958)
Here’s a SUPERBLY PRESERVED copy of this most seminal of 1st press long players – a big influence on The Beatles. Although the sleeve is showing its age, the vinyl on this particular copy is well above average – in fact the very best original Vogue/Coral copy I’ve seen.
The fully laminated, double flipback single format sleeve shows the following signs of wear/age: some laminate lift and peel to the top front right; appreciable corner wear to all four corners; what appears to be a tear to the front opening edge repaired with tape (this is inconspicuous and not immediately visible); a crease to the bottom front left corner and general small areas of laminate nicks, dents and small edge creases. The rear is pretty clean and just has a faint date written on the top flip (nearly invisible). IT HAS THE ‘B & M 58.3’ DATE CODE on the bottom flip. Overall not mint but still solid and all in one piece and structurally sound for its 54 years of age. Grades a true and not trashed G+ (Good Plus) condition.
The original 1st press black and silver labels are simply superb. Very little spindle evidence (a few faint, short lines close to the centre hole). NO writing, stickers, residue, scrapes or dirt. Really bright and vivid silver text with no dulling. A beautiful pair of these iconic vintage labels!

The solid, medium/heavy vinyl has evidently not seen much play and been very well cared for. Visually there’s a fine, near invisible hairline and one small scuff to Side 1 and a couple of even fainter and smaller lines to Side 2. Other than this, this disc is pretty much unmarked. It maintains a lovely shine, lies perfectly flat and is free from embedded dust pockets, smears or scrapes. There are NO scratches, craters or bobbles. Visually looks the part and should be hard to better – grades EX+ (Excellent Plus). IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays really well. There is a little light dust static only really noticeable in the dead wax areas. If you listen carefully you will hear the occasional soft tick and I also picked up a single ‘pop’ sound on Side 2. You will NOT hear any repeated clicks, continuous crackle, snap, hiss, distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition. I OUTLINE EVERY AUDIO SOUND AWAY FROM CD SILENCE but to all intents and purposes, this sounds really fabulous for an LP of this vintage and should not disappoint.
‘That’ll Be The Day’ was of course the song that The Quarry Men chose to cover at P.F Phillips Recording Service, Kensington, Liverpool on 12th July 1958. The rest is history. If only Buddy had lived to share in that history.
