MARC BLITZSTEIN - THE CRADLE WILL ROCK
Musicraft Album 18 - c.1938
7 - 12 inch 78 rpm records
Includes the Program Insert
with Original Cast Offered here is a genuinely rare Musicraft 78 rpm record album from the 1930s with 7 12 inch records, featuring a complete pro-union play, "The Cradle Will Rock", by the original cast including Marc Blitzstein. This was the first recording of the play. The play almost didn't happen because on opening night, the WPA closed the theater where it was supposed to open, so the cast and audience walked a few blocks to another theater and put on the play there. Since there were no props or gear, they did the play pretty much from the audience, with Marc Blitzstein playing piano and describing the scene for the audience, much like a radio play. The actors said their lines and the play went on. It was a hit and has been recreated that way on this album and later on LPs and CD. There is a ton of other info online about this play and the composer/author. He went on to become a very famous composer, but this album doesn't show up anywhere, not even in the 78discography online. (I'll send him a note so he can fill in the missing records).
The album is complete, even has the program pamphlet describing the album. The records are in excellent condition, E- at worst. The album itself is a bit worn, but still intact and in 1 piece. Holds the records just fine. The records play very well, much better than I expected. Usually, Musicraft records have noise issues, but these are quite good.
