Something Beautiful by The Cookies (1:54) single-sided 45 RPM 10" METAL ACETATE single on Regent Sound Studios, Inc. (no master/catalog #). This acetate features the same song as recorded by Margaret Mandolph on Planetary P-106, which is an interesting mix between Motown soul and Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound. But the version on this acetate is a bit more in the soulful, girl-group vibe, with a much cleaner, cripser mix, and I just love the organ solo towards the end. Just to be clear, I don't believe the singer on this acetate is either Margaret Mandolph or Adrienne Poster (aka Adrienne Posta) who also did a version, but another singer entirely. 

THE MYSTERY HAS BEEN SOLVED THANX TO AN eBAYER... The group on this acetate is The Cookies!!!  Back in 2008 during what appears to have an interesting debate as to the best version of Something Beautiful, the song's co-writer Roger Atkins, threw The Cookies "orginal demo" that he and fellow co-writer, Helen Miller" recorded into the discussion mix on the SpectroPop website.  If you do a search by "something beautiful" "the cookies" on Google, you'll find this link and a YouTube clip of the song, and that appears to be all that may be out there on this version of the song.  There was also a reference to the same song recorded by the Pixies Three, but again, I really like the version on this acetate.  Thanx again Anthony for the info!!!

I know that this may be blasphemous, but I gotta say, I really like this version more than the Northern Soul classic recorded by Margaret Mandolph. The lyrics are nearly the same between the two versions, except that on the Margaret Mandolph version, she does ad lib a bit throughout, and for the chorus hook, she sings "Something wonderful, Something beautiful". There was also a version of this song recorded and released by Adrienne Poster (aka Adrienne Posta), and it has a beat more similar to this acetate than to the Margaret Mandolph version. There's the possibility that this acetate was used as a demo version to sell artists on recording this song, no matter, this version is great!

Just a note for those unfamiliar with metal acetates - these records are extra heavy from the center of the record being made of metal. These records are the first versions ever made from the master tapes (even before test pressings or promo copies and sound the best) for the purpose of feedback on the mix by those involved in the recording process. These discs were expensive to make, so very few, if no more than one are usually made and as you can imagine, these discs are quite RARE and sometimes the mixes can be different from the final release. These were never meant to be available to the public, so in you're a fan or collector, now's your chance to get something extrememely RARE!!!

This acetate has a glued-on label to the grooved side, which has numerous small light brown dots around the label, other than that, the label appears to be in excellent condition. The vinyl on this acetate is in very good - very good plus condition with light pops/clicks throughout, which is typical for an acetate that is 30 - 40 years old. This acetate comes in the orignal Audiodisc paper sleeve, which has the title written along the spine, as well as the name "Michelle" written at one corner. I didn't attempt any physical cleaning on these fragile Acetates, for fear of damage. If you wish to physically clean them or even import them into your computer to edit them to make them sound as pristine, I'll leave that up to you. You can hear sound samples of the side/song below, which is from the actual record in this auction, and you'll notice that I've given a few distinct samples from different sections of this acetate to give you an idea of condition, sound and mix.
