A SUPERB COPY OF THIS GROOVY SWINGIN' DETROIT GARAGE ROCK ALBUM
The Come Ons and their second album Hip Check! are further testament to the mighty fine, hi octane, lowbrow, rock coming out of Detroit these days. Bands like the Von Bondies, Detroit Cobras and Mick Collins' righteous cross between Staz and the Stooges, the Dirtbombs, are kicking up some serious garage noise back in Motor City. The Come Ons--who share a couple of members in common with the aforementioned--are a little more refined and a little more salacious than their peers. Hip Check! boasts a killer laid-back organ sound somewhat reminiscent of Steve Naïve. Deanne Iovan pouts and smooches her way through a succession of minimal swingin' classics, such as the deadpan "Something Fool" and upbeat title track, like the fourth Thee Headcoatee. Hip Check! is almost unbearably poised and twice as catchy. --Everett True
