Label Conditions: All labels are in supreme condition ranging from zero to ultra light spindle traces. These records have clearly been little handled or likely played reitterated by practically perfect sound.

Cat Number: CBS FSLN1.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 115 / 115 / 118 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Moderately scarce, this did not sell that well and it’s certainly not one I have seen too often especially in this type of condition. This copy includes ‘The Armagideon Times’ triple folded insert in Mint condition.

Musicians: Paul Simonon - bass, vocal; Topper Headon - drums, vocal; Joe Strummer - Vocals, guitar; Mick Jones - guitar, vocal.

Brief Info: Following the classic double set London Calling was never going to be easy and The Clash issued this hugely ambitious triple set to a somewhat surprised fans and critics alike. This record failed to sell well and only just scraped into the top 20. Over the six sides a vast array of styles are covered, but as the title suggests, dub reggae is the strong influence here, but typical Clash rocking songs are included too and I personally feel this mammoth set is still underrated. It’s been some time since I heard this album and quite honestly I had forgotten how good this is. Brilliantly produced, these three records play pristine mint with nothing to fault at all. The delicate boxy cover too is in top condition, it’s more often seen tatty and crushed and this one retains the original manufacturer’s promotional sticker. This practically as made example will delight fans of the legendary band.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a single format (unusual for a triple set to say the least) and unlaminated. This is wide and boxy but also flimsy and most seen are in shocking conditions – crushed and flat are more the normal found. This has no printers credits but appears UK with ‘London’ references on the back. Includes the original promo sticker in mint condition on the front.

Cover Front & Back: A very clean and fresh example, flimsy for a cover that has to hold three records, hence it so often damaged and shabby. This has a few faint handling traces on the matt black areas that few will ever avoid but only really just visible under angled light and any marks are few, fine and faint. Minor record impression, but for this one, as light as they get. Barely any noteworthy creasing and the original sticker perfect. .

Top Edge: Little wear at all and still very wide and solid with any compression, light.

Bottom Edge: Still thick and wide, slight scuffing and odd chip to the white surface.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Again solid and wide, straight with little compression. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: Obviously delicate but all in very nice condition with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile early 80’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This still solid and attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inners: All original unlined inners are included, all practically as new.

The Insert: Mint as new. ‘The Armagideon Times’ with six pages and two manufactured folds that includes lyrics, comic artwork and details, this is often missing or damaged, this is practically as new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) for all three. A superb visual set that are super clean, shiny, jet black and solidily pressed on quality vinyl. A copy almost certainly not played more than two or three times most and again from an immaculate collection that were put direct to tape. Visually three of the best that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes – all six sides were played in their entirety and it was a pleasure to do so.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: These records play up to their high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a very wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this is a fine high fidelity recording with some mean bass in parts. Devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a demanding album. Few copies will match or outperform this copy I feel sure. I know all three records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these outstanding records. This set will prove very difficult to fine better and is strongly recommended.

I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
